Maybe I'm showing my age here, but I was thinking about this over the weekend. Back when I was 12 or 13, my mom and I stayed at Disney, on site, for the very first time. We stayed at the Golf Resort which, to the best of my knowledge, was one of 3 Disney hotels at the time. (Poly and Contemp being the other two). We stayed there as she obtained a great deal, and I remember it being a very nice hotel.

Not sure why I'm thinking of it now, and we have been to the World quite a few times since, but I'm wondering what ever became of it? In my memory, I also can't quite remember where it was located, only that it was not a monorail resort of course, and we needed to take a small shuttle to get to MK or the transportation station at the time to hit Epcot.

Thanks!

The Golf Resort is now Shades of Green, an Armed Forces Recreation Center. It's available to members of the military and their families, other DoD personnel, and certain groups associated with the DoD:

Wow, that is very, very cool! Thanks for the info, and what a great thing to be offered to the men and women who serve our country!

Thanks for the info and the link. :goodvibes

The Golf Resort opened in December of 1973 and originally had 125 rooms. It was located near the Palm and Magnolia golf courses between the Polynesian and the then-unbuilt Grand Floridian.

It became the Disney Inn in February of 1986 and was remodeled to have a Snow White theme. Another 150 rooms were also added at this time.

In February of 1994, the Disney Inn was leased by the U.S. Government for military personnel and the name changed to Shades of Green. The government purchased the resort outright in 1996.

We stayed there in the mid 1980's. It was a beautiful resort within easy walking Distance of the Poly. The rooms were huge and slept 5 guests. Our
rooms was on the first floor. We could sit on our patio and watch the golfers playing.

My children still remember the fired ice cream we had for desert at the Disney Inn.:goodvibes

The Disney Inn was a beautiful resort, more of a bed and breakfast than a tourist spot. There was no experience quite like it: tranquil, removed, pastoral. I'm sorry that Disney no longer owns it.

Me too. I think Disney gave up a real gem.
I just I wish I could stay again!

I can't seem to get the link to work. I'd love to see the photos. The recent ones of Shades of Green don't hlep jog my memory much.

Shades of Green has been extensively remodeled and expanded - perhaps that is why recent photos are not helping your memory of the Golf Resort.
