Well, if you have the Android, there's a free app called "Kindle for Droid" that I like. I've only downloaded one book so far but it was nice to not have to buy an entire new system for it.

I think the only bummer part so far is that there aren't any Harry Potter books.

I have an iPad so havent been in the market for ebook readers, but the main thing I have heard others say about the various ebook tablet readers is this:
Get whichever one can utilize as many platforms as possible. So, for example, if the kindle just reads kindle, but the iPad can do kindle and iBooks, maybe more, I don't know, get the iPad. (sorry, just an example, I'm not familiar with other tablet ereaders)

Not sure how this applies to all of them, but I think it would be smart to look for a tablet that utilized as many ebook sources as possible. I have definitely found that on my iPad sometimes I have to use the kindle app to read the specific book I want, sometimes it's only available on iBook.

Good luck!

I love my nook. I also have the nook app on my droid and with the new update you can pick up what you were reading on the other versions of it that you have.

Best Buy has an awesome deal on the nook. Plus Amazon has a great deal on the Kindle for BF.

I was sure I was not going to like an ereader. I read a LOT. Seriously, first name basis with every librarian in town, know the bookstore folks, etc. I bought the nook, wifi, 3G so I could easily have extra books avaliable when I'm at my dad's or DH's moms (elderly, sometimes situations come up suddenly). I love my nook. It's easy to read, easy to load, updates it's self (we lost internet connection T-Day morning, Dh got us up and running last night, Nook updated it's wifi connection with no hassle, just input the password). The latest Nook software lets me browse the web, so if I am unable to come home, I have something to do, even if I don't want to read.
If you do purchase an ereader, I'd hold off on the accessories. What I thought I wanted for the Nook (cover, etc), I don't want at all a week later. Get familar with the device and then choose the accessories you will use.

Some authors/books are not available on ANY ebook platform. Looks like Harry Potter/JK Rowling stuff is one of those. Good catch.....if that interests you....looks like paper books only!

So you give up getting an an eReader because you can't download SEVEN books? :confused3

While the iPad is great for multi-platforms, the biggest thing to keep an eye on, literally, is the screen resolution and a problem with backlighting, which computer screens have. Backlighting supposedly causes eye strain, which the eReaders don't cause because they do not have backlighting. They mimic a regular paper book page, which requires an outside source of light, like a desk lamp, book light, (or new Kindle lamp) illuminating the screen.

I don't really know anything about that, as I am doing all my eBook reading on my laptop, with the various eBook software programs. I haven't had any eye strain. But, my laptop is 5 yrs old. I recently found out older display screens darken over time. That could be why I haven't had problems.

When I was at Best Buy last week, and was talking about new laptops, the sales guy kept mentioning how the newest laptop screens were much brighter. I kept thinking, do I want brighter? I read eBooks for hours. After some research, I am focusing on getting an LED backlit screen laptop, as that is TV screen technology and hopefully will cause the least eye strain.

I think they meant that if you're interested in those books/authors, you can only get them in paper format.

(I think JKR is bananas for not putting them in e-format. The e-ink in Kindles LOOKS like magic...it would be perfect!)

DH and I own both the kindle 2 and kindle 3. The resolution on the kindle 3 is much better than the 2, the screen is the same size, but the machine itself is slightly smaller. I loved my kindle 2, it still works, but I unexpectedly like the kindel 3 better. Also, the machine is available in both white and black. I find it easier on my eyes to use the black machine than my old white one.

Exactly my situation. I'm an avid reader, about 6-8 books a week, and I wasn't sure I would like an ereader. I LOVE MY NOOK! I could never go back to a paper book. Ordering a new book, in bed, at 2am is awesome!

::yes:: I'm at my library's webpage now, looking at what eBook to download. :surfweb:
I'm in a Christmas romance mood. . . :santa:

I bought myself a Nook (3G + wireless) over the weekend, and so far I love it!!! Like a PP, I'm also in the mood for Christmas romances, but paperbacks are $7.99 a pop. Browsing for ebooks, there are quite a few Debbie Macomber ebooks for only $2.50 or $3.50. Plus some FREE books - I read a Robyn Carr book yesterday that was free. I can't wait to figure out how to borrow an ebook from the library - hopefully whatever our next book club pick is will be available as a loaner.

FYI - I kept going back and forth between a Nook and a Kindle, but you can borrow ebooks from the library on a Nook but not on a Kindle, so that's what swayed me to the Nook.

I was also certain I wouldn't like an e-reader. I'm also an avid reader and I love the feel and smell of a "real" book.

But I really do love my nook (though I haven't quite figured out how to use the web browser yet! lol) and I love how compact and easy to carry around it is.

This really surprises me especially since her books inspired an entire generation to read-and that generation is now the ones that are probably buying the bulk of the e-readers.

I just ordered the Kindle from Amazon on Friday, can't wait to get it! I almost got the Nook since you can get library books and get free stuff sometimes when you bring it with you to a B&N, but my library doesn't have ebooks yet and I don't go to B&N that often to get the little goodies. From what I can see Kindle gets better overall reviews for the device itself so I went with that. Besides, I figure Kindle will eventually get on board with library ebook lending as many people that would otherwise get a Kindle go with the Nook for that reason, and they won't want to lose out on market share like that long-term.

My DS20 said the page numbers don't line up for textbooks (and probably other books also). Is this the case?

I don't know. Is she comparing the same editions of the books? Is she using the Nook app on her computer? If she is trying to read the textbook on a Nook that might be the problem. Nook Study specifically says that the program is NOT for Nook but to be used on a computer because the functionality of the Nook (or Kindle) isn't there for the applications for the text books.

Ok, I just looked up the book I am reading on my Nook app on my phone and there are 258 pages on my phone and 368 pages in the book--BUT, there are always "previews" of other books in those too which are not on the Nook.

Yes, I would. Well, I don't really have one anyway, I use the app... but I would really consider buying one if I could download HP.

Why?

It's insane how many times I've read those books. When I'm bored, I'll read my favorite book, chapters, or any other fragment of one of the books. It's something I can pick and read and not have to finish because I know the outcome. Plus, I KNOW it's good. Other books, not so much. I have yet to find something I have wanted to read more than once.

With buying in a hard copy, I can buy a cheap used version and/or resell it if I don't like it. But I can't do that with an ebook. Once I buy it, it's mine.

If HP was on an ereader, then I could have all seven of those books at my disposal without carrying around so many books. But I don't want to do that with any other book.

So for me, I'll keep my $100-200 and spend it on something (for me) that is more worth it.
