If you saw a newborn baby in a yellow onesie with orange, teal, purple, and rose stripes, would you think it was a boy or a girl?

I assumed it was a girl, and throughally offended a new mother today, I think. :headache: It was... a boy. Oops!

I wouldn't dress a boy in anything with purple and rose, would you?

Only if I wanted people to incorrectly guess my child's gender.

I tend to completely avoid gender specific terminology with babies/toddlers. Sometimes its REALLY hard to tell!

A little OT, but I saw a guy today in a bright hot pink shirt, and he was looking FINE! I don't know if it was his tan skin against the bright pink, but I love seeing guys in pink shirts.

This color business needs to go out the window.

Honestly, I'd have to see the onesie. By your description, I would think girl...but only if I read the colors the same way as you.

I remember when my oldest was a newborn I had her dressed in a pink outfit complete with one of those horrible elastic headbands with a big bow and someone asked me "Oh, how cute, what is HIS name?":lmao:

Pink = Girl is an American thing. Other cultures will dress a baby boy in pink and not bat an eye doing so.

well, that is totally different. You can TELL a man from a woman, same as a boy child and a girl child. Usually you try to distinguish newborns and infants.

I wonder if the parents didn't know the sex until the baby was born and the onesie might have been a gift? I would assume yellow/green to be either boy or girl so it seems like it could be a safe gift for either sex.

I once offended a woman when I was working in the children's area at Busch Gardens by telling her she could bring her daughter on the ride. The child had long blonde hair and, apparently from the snarkyness of the Mom, was a boy. :confused3

I don't understand why people get offended. Unless I'm looking at what would specifically make a child a boy/girl (or they have the kid decked out in very girly or very boy stuff) most babies/toddlers look either way!

Based on the description, I would have made the same mistake and called the baby a girl. The purple and rose would make me think girl because the other two colors are pretty neutral.

I was in a purple lace party dress at about 6 months old and someone commented to my mom in a line, what a cute little boy she had. Yup, had my ears pierced the next day. I had no hair, but still....a purple lace party dress!

I'm with you and would have thought it was a girl.

Oh I know. I just thought this was the perfect opportunity for me to mention the guy who looked smokin in a pink shirt.;)

As for the mom in the OP, if she is going to dress her boy in those colors, she has no right to feel offended if he is confused for a girl.

I always say what a pretty baby. Never gender specific because there have been many times where I would have been wrong. If it's someone I am speaking with I will say what's the baby's name? If it's still unclear I just say well that's a lovely name.

I would have thought the baby was a girl too!

I just wanted to add though, my go-to color is red for unknown sex of the baby. I think a lot of people get yellow things so a good mix in color is good. But red is good on boys and girls as it can be very boyish and very girlish.

Eh, it never mattered what I had DS in(very obvious boy outfits) I was still told I have a beautiful little girl. As he got older and his hair got longer, I got it even more. I cut his hair into a very short style and STILL got comments about "her." I never got upset about it. I just shrugged it off. Babies and toddlers are so delicate featured and androgynous that most people make the mistakes of guessing wrong.

It is so difficult to tell if the baby isn't in pink. So, I just don't say anything. In the same territory as asking someone when they are due when they don't end up being pregnant. ;)

Once a baby dressed in hot pink was introduced to me as ,"my new baby." A boy really? I got that wrong! But come on new babies are usually very difficult to differentiate gender.
