We have stayed on site 5 times, and off site twice - both times at condo style resorts like the ones you mentioned. The places we stayed at were great, but I'll tell you, it is HARD to drive through the exit at the end of the day and "leave" WDW. The first time we stayed off site, we swore we would never do it again, but the following year our budget dictated off site or no Disney - so we stayed off site. And the end of that trip we swore NO MORE OFF SITE! Well, that was 3 years ago, and we've saved up to stay on site this July (Oh my gosh - in 9 days!!!!!!!) for 9 days at the Poly - we're celebrating my older son's high school graduation.
There is no question that staying on site is worth the money - for us its been a question of whether we had the money to spend on a vacation. But you really do feel like you never leave the magic when you stay on site. Especially since its your first visit, I say go for it! (Of course, I've been accused by everyone in my family of being very good at spending lots of money
)
One final thought: yes, you save lots by having a kitchen and cooking at the condo, but remember its your vacation too. As the Mom, and designated "organized leader" of my clan I have all too often spent way too much time cleaning up and making snacks, while the rest of the family is off having fun. This year I won't even let them have a coffee machine in the room!!! We're getting refillable mugs and they can walk over to the GCH when they need a snack. Mom wants to have fun too!!!
