Our 1st trip to DL is set for June 17-23, so we're going to miss the opening of Pixar by a day. My kids are thrill nuts, so they're going to be very disappointed not getting to ride the coaster or ferris wheel. First, will Toy Story and Little Mermaid be open before the rest of the area? Secondly, would you pay $1,000 to change flights to go at a later time, or simply take a day to go to Knotts Berry Farm and ride the coasters there to make up for what we'll be missing at California Adventure?

We are in a similar boat. We are slated to be there June 15-18. We will be in SoCal, however, through June 27. I will tell you that we discussed re-arranging our plans at a very low costs ($200-$300) in order to go back at the end of the trip to see Pixar Pier. For us, while we will miss out on the two rides, it wasn't even about the money, we simply have no interest in battling the chaos of those first opening days! So, we are standing pat and hoping that we benefit from people 'holding off' on their visits until PP opens.

My understanding is Toy Story and Little Mermaid are currently open and will not be closing.

I would not pay $1000 to ride screaming and the Ferris wheel. Especially considering they could have a soft opening while you are there or they could push the date back even further.

If your kids are "thrill nuts" then Screamin' is likely not going to keep them happy anyway. Now, let me just say it's my favorite ride at DLR and we are really going to miss it when we are there next month but it's not a crazy roller coaster by any stretch in the thrill department.

The reason I would suggest you go with the Knott's Berry option though is that my son loves Screamin - it's also his favorite ride but you'd be hard pressed to get him to ride the bigger rides at Knott's - he is not by any definition a thrill nut!

The wheel though? I'd not base any plans on the wheel - we rode that our first trip and have not been back on since! Nice view though.

Hope for a soft opening during you trip.

Crowds from the 23rd on are going to be NUTS!!
You might even find lower crowds during your trip due to the Grand Opening on the 23rd

The event for Guardians was $150 and sold out.

I also wouldn't change it. As someone mentioned above, California Screamin' (or whatever the new name) is alright. It definitely
isn't a WOW coaster. It is just like any other coaster that you would fine at any other amusement park. The Ferris wheel is OK. CA has so many other cool things to do. We LOVE RS & Guardians! Little Mermaid and TS should also be open. Are you park hopping? Knotts is fun, but if you want coasters visit Magic Mountain.

California Screamin is/was my favorite ride at both parks but I still wouldn't change the dates if I were you unless you are never planning to come back to DL again. It's a great ride but it's just one ride. Plus like others mentioned maybe you will luck out and get lower crowds if people plan on waiting until 6/23 to come for the reopening of the pier.

Little Mermaid is not part of the area that is changing, the area that it is in will simply have a name change. That being said, the 23rd is the opening day, so there's that. Based on past experience, they probably won't do soft openings, but they probably will have a hard ticket event on the 21st and/or 22nd for Pixar Pier, which would most likely cost less than changing flights.

This is correct. Both of those rides are open currently.

Thanks, but I’m not asking about soft openings. I know what that is from WDW. I’m talking about a possible hard ticket event like they did before guardians opened that someone else mentioned.

I have several relatives employed by Disney - my cousin is “friend’s” with Elsa, Sally, Black Widow....and another who is with the head security team (he just loves (insert rolling eyes) dealing with celebrities) anyhow I’ll inquire about the opening as I’m sure he’ll already have an idea, if not, a game plan into place.
