I found a face book group where you can post pictures of prom or pageant dresses to sell. I have someone who is interested in my daughters dress but she lives out of the country. She could pay through pay pal and I could ship it but I worry that she could report something and I would be out the dress and the money.

I wouldn't be so worried but her Facebook page looks so fake. Not many friends and such. Not many pictures. Several people have reported being scammed lately and I don't want that to happen to me here.

What should I do? I hate to judge someone like that from a Facebook page but I don't want to be scammed either.

Don't do it and don't feel bad. The only foreign country I ship to when selling things online is Canada.

ETA: with PayPal payments if you can't provide tracking, they can say they never got it and yes you'd be out the dress and the $. I ship to a canada because it can be tracked easily and is less expensive than other countries.

She lives in Australia. I think I will go with my gut on this one and not sell it to her. I can't afford to lose the dress or money from it.

If you do not feel comfortable then it is not worth it. I have sold some high end items on Ebay and worry from the moment I get a bid to the moment the buyer leaves me feedback. At least I always send with delivery confirmation - sometimes even insured - and I only ship to confirmed addresses in the US.

I have sold on eBay too and I put tracking numbers on everything and I insure everything too and I only ship to the US. . I could do that with this but she seems shady because of her Facebook account.

Some women on there have had trouble lately, I think with ordering but I'm not sure. I'm new to the group. I tried to PM one of them to check this name with her but she has not responded to me yet.

So it turns out that I couldn't see anything on her Facebook because we were not friends. I sent her a request and she accepted. My daughter looked at it and it seems legit. There are pictures of her in pageants.

Now what? Should I go ahead and do it? :confused3

I ship to Australia a lot for my ebay business. What is the weight that your shipping. Priority mail to a Australia will show a delivery scan. Supposedly first class does as well now but I haven't shipped anything there first class since the USPS made that change a couple of weeks ago. Things usually arrive quickly since there are no customs delays - their limit is $1000 before they collect duties.

I am not sure of the weight but I would guess less than 15 pounds. I thought about taking it to the post office tomorrow to see exactly how much it would cost to ship it, insure it and get tracking on it also. She said that she would pay the shipping fees so that us the only way I know to give her a quote for them since I have never done that.

I normally do all if my business through eBay so this is new to me. Say she pays through pay pal and I send it insured with tracking so that I am covered that way, what is the worse thing that could happen?

If she gets the dress and she does not like or want it she would have I return it for a refund, right? PayPal would not give her the money back for some reason without notifying me right? I just don't want to get scammed. I do know that this can happen with any sale like on eBay too. This is just an expensive dress so I'm trying to cover myself.

I would think that if she wanted her money back from PayPal she would have to open a claim just like you do with ebay/PayPal transactions. The question is do you normally allow returns when you sell on Ebay and do you want to get involved with that?

You do have to file a claim with Paypal, just like Ebay. I would not hesitate to send it with tracking/confirmation and insurance. If she opens a claim with Paypal and you provide that to them you would be covered.

I don't normally accept returns on ebay but I had to do it once because I didn't want a negative feedback posted. I do not want to accept a return on this either because she could wear it for an event and them return it.

I don't accept returns either on eBay. In my profile I clearly explain I am not a store and the items are those we no longer have use for. I am as accurate as possible and if there is any wear I take pics and it is posted.
Does this person expect that she can return it? I would say its not worth the hassle. You can supply measurements take pictures from all angles and she can decide. If she does, then it's hers final sale.

You could also ask for an international money order instead of Paypal. I used to do that often when I sold on ebay and someone from outside the US/CAN wanted to purchase something. She could still leave neg feedback on ebay if she is a scammer, but she couldn't file a Paypal chargeback.

I gave her the measurements and she has seen pictures front and back, and an up close of the beading.

That's interesting. :scratchin That may be a better way to go. This item is not on ebay so I don't know how she would leave me a negative feedback. It's on a Facebook page for buying and selling prom dresses.

Go with your gut feelings and don't do it. Is the gown really worth all of this aggravation?

Oh sorry, I saw that but for some reason my brain was telling me ebay. Have you tried taking the gown to a local consignment shop to try to sell it there? You might make just as much.

No, I have not tried that yet. We have a sale coming up but I have put dresses in there before and thy have not sold. People want something for nothing in those sales.

That's what my gut keeps telling me.

Then listen to that little voice that says 'this is going to be a problem'. I think at times we feel bad that our initial instinct is suspicious of a situation or person. Then we end up thinking why didn't I go with my gut?:confused3 you seem uncomfortable from the beginning, so I would let this one slide. I believe you said the FB page you found, you are new to. I would sit back, read and see who has transactions that are stress free. Just try selling it the way you have in the past for now. Consignment, shops usually the time for gowns is pre prom season or in some areas they have winter formals but usually it's a 50/50 split.
