What would you do with $5k

We budget between 3 and 5K per year for vacations. About 1K of that budget is needed for traveling to visit family. We try to go on a "big trip" every other year. On the off year we do something less pricey (usually the definition of that is that it doesn't involve air travel) and do more little trips.

We wanted our kids to see more of the country so WDW has only happened twice. We also wanted them to see "local" sights, so weekend trips have been great for that.

I don't know how it will wash out as the kids leave home. Probably won't have much of a vacation budget for a few years during college and then hopefully we'll travel a lot more when they're out.

I'm a budget traveler, so I never understand how some people claim to spend so little. I'm assuming the $3300 2 week trip to WDW didn't involve paying airfare? I don't know that leaving that cost out of the equation is really a fair comparison - obviously people would have to travel a lot or maybe even for a living to be able to count on free airfare. It takes me at least 5 years to earn free airfare for our family between mileage credit and our rewards card - and then I don't get mileage for those flights since they were free!

If you had $5,000 set aside for vacation (like I do), would you take one vacation a year (ahem, Disney.) Or would you take several weekend trips instead (like Hershey, Baltimore, NYC, etc.)
I don't think that I've ever spent $5K on a Disney vacation!

But if I had to choose between one nice vacation (anywhere) vs. a bunch of little road trips throughout the year, I would choose the one nice vacation.

And I agree with the people who would do Europe or another place before they would spend $5K on Disney.

I'd do both. If you want to go deluxe, try renting DVC points and go that way. We went to DC this year for a long weekend in August and caught 3 Phillies games....so much fun. Also, camping trips down at Elk Neck State Park we got to do some crabbing and just relax. Hershey is OK, but I'd rather go to Knoebels, much cheaper and less crowds. Just some thoughts....

I would do multiples. I get a lot of time off work and I can't properly stacation to save my life.

We could easily do Myrtle for 1k for a week and get a room that has a kitchen & eat our own food.
Our Disney trip was 1600ish for 2 adults and 1 Disney adult for a week including dining.
Our 5 day cruise with 3 beach days before, rental car etc was right at 2K.

So I guess what I am saying, find a way to make the 5K go towards multiple longer adventures.
