We rented a beachfront condo this year with my parents. Two bedrooms - we gave the master bedroom to my parents with king size bed while dh, DS and shared other room which had twin beds. Great place - loved it. We split the rent equally.

Next year, we have to move the visit up a week bc of my dh's work. As a result, we will be the week before labor day instead of after. Although the rent is the same, we would now only get one parking spot instead of two bc the condo place will be busier that week. Instead of a parking spot, we will get a permit to park a couple of blocks away. We just found this out.

I now have to talk to my parents about this development. I say since we are the one's requesting the change (my parents prefer the week we had this year bc it is less busy but totally understand work), we should have to take the spot a couple of blocks away. My dh says that they already get the better bedroom and we made all the investigation, negotiating for this place so they should get the spot. I have to tell my parents about this one way or another - what do you think? Us getting the better spot bc they have the good master bedroom already or they get the better spot bc we are the ones requesting the change.

I agree with you. You are changing the week, which changes the parking situation, so you should take the spot a few blocks away.

While you are there, do you go places together in one car or take both? I would say if you travel in one car, that car should get the closer spot.

Also, how old is your DS? Will it be a big deal if you have taking him a couple of blocks each time you use the car?

How about whoever can walk the distance easier should get the spot? Or even better than that, how about whichever car is going to be staying parked longer sits in the further spot and whatever car is going to be used most often or next, then goes in the closer spot?

I just don't see this as being a big deal that is worth debating about.

Good points. I'd figure out who is likely to need the car more. For instance, who does the majority of the grocery shopping while you're there? Or even better, now that I think about it, just pick a car, and the other car owner gets to drive it too, assuming all trips are pretty close by.

I'd park farther away and then everytime somebody needs something from the store I'd tell my Dad he has to go because his car is closer. ;)

Seriously - does it matter all that much?

^This. :thumbsup2

We do this all of the time at our beach rental. The cars that are used least, park on the street. The cars that are going to be in and out a lot get the garage spots. It has nothing to do with who pays more, made the arrangements or got the better room.

I'd let whoever has the bigger car park closer - they can then drive you to your car :lmao:

Or - is this a situation where often one of you are using your car while the other isn't? If that's the case, then I'd want to see if either of you are OK with the other driving your car - if you are, then your car gets parked closer, and whoever needs it, takes it!

They're your parents. They get the closer space.

ITA!!! You're really asking if you can justify having your parents hoof a few blocks:confused3. I'd upside DH's head if he suggested that either of our parents had to walk due to an issue like this. Unfortunately, both sets of parents are gone now--however, we'd never be having this discussion in the first place.

Wow! Such "warm, fuzzy responses..":sad2:

Do your parents have issues that would make it difficult for them to walk the further distance?

Would the car being parked closest be the one used most often?

Do you have a small child (or children) that would make it difficult if you parked further away?

Those would be the things I would be looking at to determine what would work out best for all involved..

Good luck! :)

You're correct. Your parents should get the better spot, because you guys are the one making it so you only have 1 parking spot.

:thumbsup2 Totally agree, this shouldn't be an issue, of course your parents should have the closer parking spot!

You are younger than your parents... You should always let them park closer, no matter what.

Well, if you are pregnant or someone has a broken leg, that might be an exception.

;)

is there no other condo that would give you both appropriate sleeping arrangements and 2 parking spots?

I believe out of respect for your parents and the fact they are your elders - they should get the closer spot.

I agree with you. You requested the change that resulted in the parking problem. Plus you are the younger ones and can make the walk easier.
