I am taking an ethics class this semester and this came up today.

What would your limits be, for family, friends, people that you don't know. Would you risk your life? Would you help someone that you do not know if someone was hurting them and it was going to make you late for work and the boss mad at you?

Ooooooooooh! I took a morals and ethics class years ago, the first go round at college, and I loved it!!!!! I loved to hear how different people would react given different circumstances. :)

First question -- how far would I go? I know I would risk my life. I've been in the situation before, or felt like I was in the situation before. The "fight or flight" instinct takes over, and if you love someone, the instinct is to fight for the loved one, or get them and flee, not flee by yourself. It's not something you really think about at the time, it's just an instinct or natural reaction to protect the person you love. I'm not sure if the same thing happens with a stranger, because I've never been in that situation. Part of me says yes and part of me says no, it just depends on the situation.

Second question -- would I be late, absolutely. My boss can either get over being mad or not. It's up to him/her, but if someone needs help, I'm not going to walk away. It might be that all I could do is call the cops and wait for the cops to come, but I wouldn't walk away and not do anything just because it would make someone angry at me.

Good questions! ACK! LOL! :p :D

My boss would never be mad at me for helping someone.

Possibly. If I was alone and I really thought I could do something to help. If my adrenaline was kicked in, I most definately would help.

depends on if i had the girls with me or not, but my original answer was the same as Jason's, what's a scrawny little guy like myself gonna do??

I would risk my life for a loved one or dear friend.

Depending on the situation, I might stop to help someone I didn't know, or I'd call the police for them. Unfortunately, there are too many wierdos out there who would fake a crime in progress in order to get a real victim. I wouldn't want to become a statistic myself, so I'd most likely not get involved beyond calling the cops. Again, depending on the situation. And if it's a kid -- yep, I'd get involved. Or try to, anyway.
