So I used to go to a dentist that I liked. I thought they were honest and were really good with me and my fear of dentists.
Well, we moved and the old dentist was pretty out of the way, so I decided to find a new one. I will admit, it has been about 2 years since I have been to the dentist so I was not expecting a perfect outcome.
Anyway, I go to this new dentist which is a newer office with two younger dentists that own and run it. I go through the whole x-ray and exam with the hygentist. She said that nothing was jumping out at her but there may be a couple of spots we just want to watch. Ok, I can handle that. She also told me that all 4 of my fillings are silver and those tend to break down after time and that mine where showing some wear, but nothing alarming. Funny, since I got one of them about 3 years ago. How could it be breaking down already?
So she finishes up and goes to get the dentist to take a look. He took a VERY quick look at my x-rays and then poked around in my mouth for a few minutes. He did not do the mouth cancer exam that I have had done in the past, but maybe they don't do those anymore.
After he finishes he proclaims that I have 8 cavaties and need a crown on one of my teeth.
Of course 4 of them are under my already existing silver fillings that now need to be taken out and replaced with composite fillings (which my insurance does not cover). There is not a chance in hell that I am going back there and having 8 teeth worked on from this guy. I am 36 years old and have had a total of 4 cavaties my entire life, how do I all of a sudden have 8 of them?
So needless to say, I won't be going back there and will be returning to my old dentist. I was wondering if I should go to him and get a second option. Obviously my insurance won't cover that because they only allow one exam every 6 months. My old dentist said that if I can bring in the x-rays that they took yesterday at this new dentist, they will do the exam for $55.00. That seems really reasonable to me. So what would you do? Just wait 6 months and go in to my old dentist and see what they say? Or go and pay the $55 and have them look at them now? None of my teeth are really bothering me but I don't want to make something worse if it really is a problem. If I do go for the second opinion, do I just call the old dentist and tell them I want to pick-up the x-rays? Will they give me grief about it?

I'd pay the $55 for the peace of mind. Your new dentist is supposed to send the x-rays on to another dentist, if you request it. They are yours. It's also to prevent getting too much radiation from having excessive x-rays done.
