hi! I have a dilemma....

I have my family of 7 booked in connecting staterooms for Aug 16, 2011 (Alaska) in cat 5c's....deck 6, midship verandahs. I booked this on "opening day" back last Sept.

DH informed me yesterday that it is too expensive and doesn't want to go:eek:

So after sleeping on it, I told him this morning that I'd look into cheaper options. My choices are....same sailing, Aug 16, connecting cat 9D's on deck 1 OR Aug 9 sailing connecting 10C's on deck 2. The price is identical (the 9D's are $90 more- in total). We'd save approx $2850 staying in the 10C's vs. the 5C's. My parents would save approx $1115, we'd save approx $1740.

We've sailed on DCL quite a few times and only 1 other time did we sail in a non-verandah. We were on deck 2, way aft....I was motion sick for most of the trip.

I really don't want to disappoint my children (or my parents!) and not take the trip, but I really don't want to be motion sick the whole time either. Also, my dad is not the most agile person- he's 80 and would not be using the stairs. Would it become really annoying being elevator dependant and being on deck 1 or deck 2?

TIA......

We were on Deck 1 last Oct and never had a problem getting an elevator. As a matter of fact, it seemed like there was an elevator always waiting there just for us. :cool1: Good luck! I'd take Deck 1 anyday over no cruise at all.:thumbsup2

We were deck 1 mid ship and it was great! No one got motion sickness and it was very rare that we had to wait on an elevator.

I agree. We actually love deck 2 aft, right near the elevators. I do enjoy a window for natural light and the view but simply can't justify the extra cost to have a verandah compared to the amount of time we spend in the room. Dh and I tried one once w/o kids and still barely used it.

I also looked into that Aug 16 sailing and it was crazy high. For thousands less, we looked at the following week's 4 nt but ended up booking a 3 & 4 nt in Nov when our kids get 3 days off. Still $1500 cheaper than the 5 nt, still have 2 visits to cc and get 7 nts on ship vs. 5.

You could choose a cheaper sailing and if you still really want the verandah, put the kids in an inside room across the hall if they're old enough.
Good luck!

Deck 2, or 1 I'm sure is going to be just fine. My wife and I have sailed once each on the Magic and Wonder, and both times been in a Cat 9 room on deck 2 in the middle of the ship. We have never had a problem with elevators getting up to deck 9, and you are only 1 floor down from the main lobby!

I'm with everyone else, save the money and downgrade. I know everyone has a different opinion on rooms, but for my wife and I it was about just getting a room to get us on the ship as we were really only used the room for bathing, changing, and sleeping. I think a balconey would be cool, however it's a bit out of our price range for our family of six, but we haven't had any issues on either of our cruises being on deck 2.

In fact, we have a Cat 9 booked for next June on deck 2 on the Dream!! Again I know everyone has different opinions on what rooms work for them, but I don't think you'll have any problems with at Cat 9 room (they actually have pretty large windows)... :D

Also, don't worry about the room in there. There were 6 of us in connecting staterooms and we had lots of room.:)

wow! thanks for the responses! And yes, I'd rather go in any cabin than not go at all!

my kids are too small to be in a room by themselves and I tried to look for cabins across the hall, but could not find anything suitable. So my choice is either an inside, way aft, on deck 2(2643/45) or an outside, midship on deck 1(1050/52).

the other issue I had with our deck 2 cabins (2135/37) was the noise and vibration when the ship was docking....so I'm thinking I'd hear/feel the same in the deck 2 cabins (2643/45), but would it be the same with deck 1 cabins 1050/52?

Personally, I would prefer Deck 6. Financially, I would go with whatever you can afford if you really want to go, but I would try to go for midship or aft. I was on Deck 7 forward and when we hit rough seas I felt it, so I try to stay midship or aft on our cruises. I also prefer the verandah but went for just an outside cabin because of financial reasons before, saved me a lot of money and that ended up being our spending money. I hope you're able to go.

We actually stayed in 1052! My kids loved the double port hole, no sharing required lol There really weren't any noise issues at all that I can think of.

---Edited...actually I just double checked...we were in 1048, so just a couple doors down!

CADisneyMom,

I completely agree....I really love the verandah. I'm always on it every chance I get. It is really nice when travelling with alot of people, it's just space that noone is sleeping in and so I can relax and not disturb anyone and still be in my PJ's (eating room service stuff!).

But DH is complaining (alot) about the cost, so I think I'm going to have to let the verandahs go and decide between the deck 1 inside or deck 2 outside (2 small portholes), or not go at all which will start me complaining alot!

momto2inKC,

I'm beginning to "sway" haha in that direction...the 1050/52 combo. I'd prefer deck 2 (vs. deck 1), but deck 1 is midship and is an outside cabin (9D) with the 2 portholes. It's also the same price (well, almost, it's a $90 difference in total) as the 10C deck 2 cabins.

I inquired about connecting 10A's, but there are none to be had on any Alaska sailing in 2011. That would've been a great "happy medium"! In my mind, anyway!

I'd go for the deck 1 oceanviews for basically the same price. We were on deck 1 this past summer and liked how quiet it was. It's easy to take the midship or forward elevators.

I would agree with you, I would rather have something lower then not go at all, so I would go with the outside cabins (I had an inside the first time & had to spend a lot of time in there since I got 2nd degree burns & became claustraphobic (?sp)). Go for deck 2 outside and have a great time.

Try to get a mid-ship berth to reduce motion sickness; deck level should not matter so much for motion sickness.

The lower decks seem to be much better as far as elevators are concerned. They always come down empty.

So I was able to reduce our cost from aug 16, connecting cat 5c's to aug 23, connecting cat 10b's (2607/09.....aft, but between the aft and midship elevators) from $7361 to $4797 ($2564 savings) for the 5 in my family. My parents went from $3990 to $2490 ($1500 savings).

So even though I was totally going to go for the deck 1, connecting cat 9d's on Aug 16, the additional savings between that sailing and the Aug 23 sailing is $827 for my family of 5 and $400 for my parents.

Cabins 2607/09 looks like the winners! Hope my DH agrees.......

Sorry, I read the part where you mentioned Alaska. I thought you meant the Dream. :guilty:

I hope you find a happy medium for you and your dh. :goodvibes

I've been on both deck and never had a problem getting an one... and if you can stay mid ship it will help with the motion problem

I was just going to say stay on the warmer Aug 16 sailing & go for the portholes on deck 1 so you can see all the scenery & I guess I'm too late. Hope your DH is happy now!! Pack warm so you can go out on deck to enjoy the view & have fun!!
