What would you bring to save money at Aulani?

Dear CW,
We are a few days away from our Aulani vacation, truly looking forward.
I am trying to figure out if there is anything we can purchase ahead of time to save some money.
We will be bringing our own Snorkeling gears suggested by our friends. And we will have a rental car to go to the nearby Target for groceries shopping.
Any other things you can think of?

Thank you very much.
Tai

Instead of bringing something I would buy an Aulani large Tervis tumbler from the gift shop. They don't cost much more than a refillable mug but they hold so much more liquid. Fill it up in the room with tea, soda, coffee & bring to the pool to save on drinks during your stay. And you get a great souvenir to take home too.

Also, bring lots of sunscreen & re-apply often!!!

Definitely bring your own sunscreen. It's very expensive there. We always buy breakfast and lunch food as well as appetizers and wine. I bring my own wine opener. I mite make dinner a couple of times but if you drive back into kapolei where the Tsrget and grocery stores are there are lots of restaurants. Also the marketplace across from the hotel offers good takeout good. We have mugs from previous visits and there is never a problem using them.

The workout classes are free and excellent. Also the fitness center is good.

The marriott next door has a sushi restaurant thst has a happy hour with decent prices.

Personally I would not pay for a luau. The one at Aulani doesn't have food but The entertainment is excellent.

Also if you play tennis you can bring your own rackets and play at the Marriott for 23 an hour

Finally, you can easily do pearl Harbor on your own for very little. Reservations are available online. The excursion is way overpriced.

I just bought a set of 3 tiny little apothocary jars in the travel aisle at Target. They're probably intended for creams & cosmetics but I am going to use them to bring some olive oil & Wegman's basting oil (I don't think these jars will leak but I'll put them in a ziplock too just in case). We are just in a studio so I am sort of planning to use the grills for at least one meal to cook some fish or something. I usually put olive oil & sea salt on the outside of our potatoes before I wrap them in foil & bake them on the grill and I use the basting oil on fresh vegetables when I roast or grill them. I will put some sea salt in a "snack size" baggie to bring. I am also planning to bring some pre-cut sheets of foil to wrap the potatoes in. Olive oil, foil and seasonings are things I'd prefer not to have to purchase there for just 1 meal.

Awesome ideas, I am putting foil on my list!

We own at the Marriott next door, and go for 2 weeks every other year. I've pretty much got our packing down after so many trips!

I bring a suitcase with nonstick Reynolds Wrap, lots of ziploc bags, several plastic food storage containers (for our own leftovers), a bottle of Spike (it's a great all purpose season salt blend, excellent on pretty much everything), other spices, Splenda, a can of Pam, several small bottles of condiments like a tiny pancake syrup & mayo as we may only need a small amount, package of pancake mix, etc. Also maybe a taco dinner kit (or buy that at Target). I may bring a few side dish things too like rice mixes. Oh, and we like Korean rice so will either brings a small bag or buy it at Target. Then we do a big stock up trip to Costco for fresh fruit and a veggie tray, salads, and of course wine and booze (their brand of French vodka is actually Grey Goose and it costs about what you'd pay for two cocktails at the bar!). I'll also buy a package of frozen burgers and buns (the burgers can be thawed and used as ground beef, so we'll make tacos once and burgers a couple of times). We drink soy milk, and like Costco's brand so will also get a case of that as well as a couple cases of bottled water. Then we use Target or Walmart for smaller amounts of things.

We tend to eat lunch out if we're running around, but if we're in the villa we'll make sandwiches and salads, or I'll cook a nice lunch. You can get frozen chicken terriyaki at Costco, which is great with Korean rice (the Marriott villas all have rice cookers now) and dried seaweed (Target sells it there; Costco does too but it's a huge pack). Add some nice fruit (Costco has Hawaiian pineapples, yum, and they're so cheap) and you've got a great lunch. If we're in the villa we'll do that and then have down time to stay out of the sun for a couple hours.

We'll grill fish sometimes, and Costco tends to have very fresh fish! Just bring seasoning from home and a small bottle of good olive oil or buy that at Target. Costco often also has nice sashimi trays too!

We'll buy breakfast things at Target, like eggs, sausage, biscuits (my kids like those refrigerated ones), frozen hash browns maybe too. I'm not a big breakfast eater, but the kids like it! I also tend to bring a couple packs of McCormick instant sausage flavor gravy mix: just add 2 cups water and you've got decent gravy for biscuits.

I bring a small cooler, so we bring snacks, sandwiches, and drinks to the pool.

I'd love to keep this place to myself, but what the heck! There's a newer place by Safeway in Kapolei called Sushi Bay - it's a conveyor belt sushi place. They have the best sushi and great prices - we used to love Genki Sushi for years but now prefer this place!

We don't spend more eating in Hawaii than we do at home really, but we lived there for 3 years so know what we like and tend to spend a lot of time at the resort now.

We also start collecting mayo & mustard packs before our trips, since they are so easy to pack. I put spices in Tic Tac containers. We usually go to Hawaii for about a month at a time split between 2or 3 islands, so we don't eat out every single day. When we do, we stick to lunches and Happy Hours, with an occasional dinner. I'm not a huge eater, so it's easy for me to share a plate lunch with my husband.

I agree! Awesome idea! I was going over our grocery list and trying to think of a way not to buy so many condiments, spices etc.

Ziploc bags in all sizes. Using these to bring snacks to pool or beach rather than bringing the whole container. Wooden clothespins to keep things like your chip bags closed, etc. Coupons from Target.com, I saved $$ on sunblock, PB, jelly, etc. All things I needed anyway.

Read this somewhere and it is the best way to bring spices along. Buy a big 7 day pill container and you can fill it with chives, thyme, seasoned salt, etc. in each of the days. I wrap some Saran Wrap around it for traveling and then we don't have to buy bigger quantities that we will never use after we get there. Love it! :)
