What would the ethical Diser do?

I guess I'm not any better than the gossiper. But this is serious stuff and I just don't know how to respond. Should I go back to the grapevine to tell them they should call the cops? Do I even know enough to call the cops? I know the names, but thats about it.

Who exactly is the "proper authority" in this situation? I know who the theif is, and from a brief time being around them, they have no fear of jail or the police. So unless an action is actually done, trying to put the fear of God in them isn't going to work.

If they are not afraid of the law, I wouldn't say a word to them about it. I am not a police officer, so I don't know how they would respond.

You admit that it is just gossip to you. That, even though you don't care for the two and wouldn't be surprised if it were true, you just can't be sure. So you could treat this like the "mandatory reporter" thing and call it in just so you know that you did what you could, or you could just walk away.

Lacking evidence, I would walk away. I don't need someone who isn't afraid of the police causing my family grief over something like this.

Unless you know this to be fact, you are not really in a position to report them to anyone. Personally, I would disassociate myself from them, as it is only a matter of time before they start stealing stuff from other places. I also have no use for liars and cheats!

I agree. You are hearing this second-hand, so you don't really know for a fact. I wouldn't recommend reporting them unless you saw this for yourself. However, in your place I wouldn't have them in my life anymore. :(

Since the terrorists win when we shoplift I think the proper authority would have to be Janet Napolitano. :goodvibes

In all seriousness, stay the heck out of it. How is gossiping about this on the Interwebs any better than gossiping about it among friends?

It's not firedancer, I just can't get this off my mind. Especially around the holidays, the stores are packed, things get broken, boxed damaged, steep discounts, they've already got enough on their plate. Then there's theft on top of it.

There is going to be theft with or without these miscreants. They are almost certainly not stealing enough to move the needle in these stores. Putting them away would end their theft, but it won't make those stores any more likely to reach profitability.

If you feel compelled, act - but don't think that you are saving the stores. Their prices take theft into account. They factor creeps like this into their price model.
