What would make you buy direct?

Though I'm sure people sell for a lot of factors, a frequent one seems to be "wanted another resort". I wonder if it would be worth Disneys time to have a "trade in your points" incentive kinda like on used cars if current owners like a new resort better than the one they own, to pay the point difference plus a fee for the convenience of not having to go through resale. I think an overall buyback program has not been implemented for many good reasons, but just thought I'd share the trade-in thought since that would also encourage me to buy direct if I saw another new resort I *had* to own.

I'm sure that some people do sell over one satisfaction issue or another, but reading the forums all these years that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Both DVC's own surveys and independent measures show their members' satisfaction to be the highest in the industry. .

In my opinion there are a number of owners (guessing 20%) who don't return the surveys regarding their satisfaction. I think the way the DVC is being sold recently many owners are not understanding the full aspects of all the benefits of DVC. This causes owners (5 to 15%) who end up not using their membership and once that happens for 1 or 2 years then they look to sell their points. Maybe that is too small a percentage for Disney to worry about but I wish they would address it a little more.

I'm not ready to buy more BCV points yet, but I rarely see what I want for sale at that resort, so yes, I would buy them direct, 25-40 points at a time.

We have been watching resales for a while for a small BCV contract with a June UY. They are practically non existent, or people on waiting lists were buying them before they were listed for the general public. So, we bought 60 pts. direct in Oct. Yes, full retail price.

I've noticed the same as I'd like to add on at BWV in a few years time and there seem to be no small resale contracts :(

I bought direct at BLT before it was built, and I bought Aulani in the same manner. Can't buy resale on resorts that aren't open yet. By buying early, you can get some REALLY good incentives and prices.

Love the point trade-in idea!

We bought resale on our 1st small contract. We planned to go direct for our 2nd contract but just couldn't justify the price difference. We found a smaller-than-we-wanted contract on resale and paid cash. Price has been the biggest determining factor for us. But now that we are locked in with the UY we want, we may consider buying direct.
When there was still an incentive for adding on 50 points direct, that did make some sense. Sure, it cost more than resale, but with full points, no closing costs and preferred UY - it made some sense to pay a few hundred extra.

We've got two contracts, one we bought from the developer and one we bought on the resale market. I would do either again.

I'd buy from the developer again if the prices were fairly close on a newish resort, for the lack of hassle and ability to use the points much sooner. I found buying resale more stressful, so given a fairly minor price difference, I'd definitely buy from the developer. I can also be tempted by really good promotions. I was really tempted by the free cruise promotion, for example. The timing was wrong for us, but if they offer it again, I'll probably be buying.

If we decide to get a handful of SSR points for those trips that we plan within the 7 month timeframe, which we have considered a couple of times, we'd almost certainly buy resale. When the price difference is that extreme, I really can't see buying anything but resale.

We know we're going to get more points at some point in the next couple of years, but we don't actually need the points until 2012 or 2013. So I'm going to keep an eye on current promotions. I'm also keeping an eye on resale prices.

I admit I'm curious about what they're going to do with the tiered system. Not that I want to bring that thread over here, but if they manage to make the perks actually useful to me personally, it might make me more likely to purchase points that would get me to a particular level.

If DVC offered unit upgrades within the last 30 to 45 days of check-in into larger units say if you owned a certain amount of points bought direct, I would be tempted. Also, some type of general pass discount (say like the one that Florida residents get, the after 4:00 Epcot pass, etc.).

Wyndham offers their VIP owners an upgrade (in slower seasons based on availability) into larger units. DVC could do something like this without hurting their resale buyers.

Free Theme Park Admission for the life of the contract would do it for me. Other than that, I'm saving my money and buying resale.

We are considering an add-on right now at AKV. As far as we are concerned, the only way we would buy direct would be if there were incentives (that we would use) that brought direct prices within $5 per point of resale. Right now, I think the direct prices for an add-on are in the $100's versus resale in the $70's.

$110+ vs $50 in some cases. :) Except for the very smallest sized contracts, this cost difference is way more valuable than any special perk or VIP offer could be worth as far as I can imagine.

Example: a 150 point contract that saves you $60 per point = $9,000 saved.

Well, as we're seriously getting ready to do an add-on soon, I'm finding it really difficult to find a small add-on contract that isn't stripped of points.

We need more points for a big extended family trip in 2012 - in an AKV GV. We currently only own 160 points, so with banking and borrowing, we still need more points!

I'm seeing some 50 pt. contracts (not many) on the Timeshare Store, but most don't have any points coming UNTIL 2012! :scared1: Well, I need points coming before that.

I sent in my info to Timeshare Store tonight, but unless I can get a contract that isn't stripped, I'll have to buy direct. My little nieces know that they get their first Disney trip in the summer of 2012, so our time frame is set!

So that would be our reason for buying direct. (Although, we'll buy less points if we go direct than if we did resale.)

I agree Bobbiwoz. We own at BCV too and our last 2 add-ons have been for 50 and 40 points direct. Couldn't find what we wanted resale. Still paid a little more but I could justify it once I factored in the closing costs I would have paid going resale. ( Not to mention getting my points IMMEDIATELY! haha)
