What would happen to our points

We have some banked points from this year that we might use for a trip next Fall that we are not sure if we will be taking or not, but would like to book now just in case. We're having a baby in May and would like to go, but aren't sure if we'll feel up to it or not when the time gets closer.

My question is this: If we book with the banked points and cancel more than 31 days out from our trip, what would happen to those points? Thanks...

you realized that you MUST use any holding points this use year time.

Thanks! Yes, we are aware that the points need to be used by March 31st 2008 as our use year is March. Thanks for checking! We just weren't sure what would happen if the time came and we felt like we were being too ambitious by taking a 4-6 month old and needed to cancel.

If you have a March use year, they'll need to be used by the end of February. Your next use year starts March 1st.

I actually think 4-6 months is quite a good time to take a baby (particularly combined with cooler weather and DVC accomodation so kitchen / laundry facilities)

We took our new baby at 4 months, and again at 1 yr and 2 1/2 and I would say that 4 months was the easiest, certainly easier than she would be now at 3 1/2 and very demanding.
At that stage they are pretty happy in their stroller or in a sling, and will just go along with your plans for the day. Obviously you can't do power touring, but you can still have a lovely vacation.

If you cancel 31 or more days ahead, the points are just returned to your account. If they have already been banked, they will expire at the end of your current Use Year (since they have already been banked) if they are not used for another reservation. If they are current points, they could be banked (subject to normal banking deadlines) or reused before the end of the Use Year.

They would NOT become Holding Points as long as the reservation was cancelled 31 days ahead. 30 days or less would send them to the Holding Account.

March Use Years run from March 1 thru the following February 28/29.

Thanks for the correction on the expiration date...I meant to say Feb but had March on the brain (it's a pregnancy thing...you lose your mind!).

WebmasterDoc if I read your note correctly, since some of the points we would be using are banked from 2006-2007 use year, they would be forfeited if we or someone we know cannot use them by the end of February 2008?

I'm not Doc, but Yes, that's correct.

With a February use year -

2006 points are good for stays between 2/1/2006 and 1/31/2007.

If you bank them to 2007, they are good for stays between 2/1/2007 and 1/31/2008. If you don't use them before 1/31/2008, they expire and are lost to you.

I just have to add that 4-6 months is the PERFECT age to take a baby. My DS is 5 months. We took him at 3 months which was very easy and are taking him again in 2 weeks. Because he is not mobile it is a piece of take to take him and he is easy to entertain. We brought a sling to help hold him in line. The fall is great b/c it will not be too hot. GL and congrats!

Make yourself a little Use Year chart. A March UY chart looks like this:

Use Year....Vacation Dates
2006.....Mar 1, 2006 thru Feb 28, 2007
2007.....Mar 1, 2007 thru Feb 29, 2008
2008.....Mar 1, 2008 thru Feb 28, 2009
2009.....Mar 1, 2009 thru Feb 28, 2010

Now, consider that for each of the above year you get your regular point allocation. Regular points can be banked into the following year, or borrowed into the preceeding year.

Once points are banked (or borrowed) into a different year, they cannot be moved again and are permanently assigned to that year. If not used by the end of the year they are forfeited.

So if you bank any of your 2006 points into UY 2007, they must be used between Mar 1, 2007 and Feb 29, 2008 since banked points cannot be returned to their original year, nor may they be banked again. Also they may not be borrowed.

Any regular 2007 points do not have to be used by Feb 29, 2008 but can be banked into UY 2008 if desired.
