What will you read?

I enjoyed Gone Girl as well.
Have you read (and do you recommend) any of Flynn's other books?

I've also read Sharp Objects and have the third downladed but haven't read yet. It was good also.

If you want a light read Safe Haven is really good. (Movie out now)
I LOVE the Hunger Games soooooo good, I NEVER would of thought hearing about it I would of liked it but I absolutely LOVED it!!!

I'm sorry to say I didn't like A Casual Vacancy and I wanted so much to like it because I wanted to see JK Rowling succeed at something besides Harry Potter--which I loved--all of them. I started the book when it came out, and I just couldn't make myself sit down and finish it. I finally finished it about a month ago--and I am a fast reader. I was just disappointed, I guess.
I feel the same way. I bought it the day it came out. I *still* haven't finished it; I'm only about half way through, and just can't make myself pick it up again. I think JK Rowling is such a fabulous storyteller; I don't know what happened with this one!

I'm having a horrible time getting into Wool Omnibus. Horrible. And it's been recommended by many, so I keep trying, but I just can't seem to get going on it.

I'm an avid reader (I shoot for 10,000 pages a year) and am always looking for new books! I have a backlog of about 25-30 on my Kindle at any given time.

I just finished "What Alice Forgot" by Liane Moriarty and really enjoyed it - it was different.

I've been trying to clean out my "to read" file, so some of my recently reads are not recently released. That might help, for those looking for books at the library.

Other books I've read this year:
The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier (fairly new)
Life of Pi by Yann Martel

From previous years, my top recommendations:
Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
The Cat's Table by Michael Onjaatje (but maybe not on a cruise.....)
Finding Nouf and City of Veils by Zoe Ferraris
Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
South of Broad by Pat Conroy
Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian
The Postmistress by Sarah Blake
Noah's Compass by Anne Tyler
The Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander
The Dive from Claussen's Pier by Ann Packer

If you're looking for lighter reads, I really enjoy Emily Giffin. If you're looking for fast reads, I think Kristin Hannah books fly by - for me anyway.

Hope this helps! I could go on and on about books! Can't wait to see what else people recommend.

I'm bringing Killing Kennedy. I rarely read fiction. However, I have read a lot of Patricia Cornwell, but prefered her earlier books. Can anyone recommend a writer similar to Cornwell OR a good historical crime book ?

has anyone been reading the Game of Thrones books? my son is trying to get me to read them because 'they are so good' but I get so confused with the tv series and am a bit worried that I will not be able to follow the books.
any thoughts?

I just finished "The Avator's Wife". Historical fiction about Charles Limburger's wife. I really enjoyed it.

Have you read 11/22/63: A Novel, by Stephen King? I had not read a Stephen King book in many years, but this one had great reviews and an intriguing premise. It did not disappoint!

I second this recommendation! Fabulous book, fascinating premise, not at all what you think of when you hear "Stephen King". Highly recommend it!

Kathy Reichs.

I love cornwell as well. Have you tried Ann Rule- she is true crime but is an excellent writer and does not sensationalize stories but gives good background etc.

Jodi picoult is another author I love

I have to agree with both of you. Excellent story and very cool premise.

I highly recommend her other two, Sharp objects and Dark Places. I really loved Gone girl but thought those two were even better.

I learned on vacation I will not read dark stuff. I packed "Insurgent" by Veronica Roth and then bought "Life as We Knew It" by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Read both on the boat (read 4 books on the 8 day trip.). My problem? Read the latter two the last part of my trip. "Life As We Knew It" is the most depressing book on the planet. Not only was it like "end of the world..." (the lady at the book store said "If you like the Hunger Games, you'll like this!") it made me want to cry and curl up into a ball. I was so depressed after reading it. Yeah not doing that this trip! I plan to read things that are fluffy.

I just finished "When In Doubt, Add Butter" by Beth Harbison. Really cute and fun!

Both of these are me to a T. I read 3 books on my 5 day trip last month - and they were all non-depressing (not light and fluffy, necessarily, but not sad).

I agree! Gone Girl has gotten a lot of attention, but her earlier books are very good.
