What will they ban next? (tongue in cheek)

After reading the clothesline thread and the salt ban thread, I started to wonder if the government will decide to ban clothes dryers.

Just imagine all the busybody neighbors of the nation, marching on Washington to protest.

But hey, they did make us all get those low-flush toilets! Maybe I shouldn't joke about it!

The planned mandating of Energy Star appliances in California is in effect banning many things that are seen as "inefficient". I am not very fond of this turn of events. If a consumer wants to purchase something that uses more energy (gas, electricity, whatever) and is willing to pay for the additional use they should be free to. No one should be legislated greener.

I choose to purchase a car that gets good gas mileage to save money. I would choose an efficient television or dryer provided they weren't priced at too high of a premium to save electricity. I do choose to keep my thermostat pretty low in the winter and high in the summer to conserve gas and electricity. All of these things, however, are and should remain the choice of me the consumer and not a mandate.

That isn't really new. There have been arguments for years about the marketing of unhealthy food directly at children. Offering toys in sugar laden cereal boxes or with happy meals is a not too subtle way of doing just that. I remember from a business ethics class that there had been attempts as far back as the 80's to stop this kind of advertising.

While I think the practice is not ethical it is up to the parents to give into the marketing and buy the food for the toy or put their foot down and say no.
