What we''ve learned after several trips as DVC members

We are looking forward to our first DVC Disney world trip in Sept and my husband has to keep reminding me we'll be back, we bought DVC so we don't HAVE to do it all. We have 2.5 resort days planned but thinking ahead to FP selections I am having a hard time not thinking commando open to close. We don't live close and the kids are young enough to still believe in the magic of it all so it's hard for me to cut things out. For now, the planned resort days may be the only way to break me of the full commando vacation style.

We just bought at the Poly and are staying there for the first time in a studio in July (not on points, but with a great AP discount. Using points for the first time next spring). My mindset has already changed! We are only doing MK and Epcot and in Epcot I only have FP booked for the new Frozen ride and Soarin'. We are spending the bulk of every day at the resort and by the pool. We are looking forward to a nice, relaxing vacation at a beautiful resort! I can't wait!

Completely agree. And the laundry in a one bedroom allows one to pack light. I don't mind doing a load of laundry while I'm enjoying a cocktail on the balcony! Now we look forward to our NON-park days. YAY!

I'm more like Ziravan. I would like to slow down, but I love the attractions too much. I envy those of you who have managed to retool your vacations to truly enjoy the resort time. Every trip that's my goal, and then I go to MK and see 3 mountains that must be conquered, or I have FP for TSM at HS, and I so love the Little Mermaid, and maybe I'll get a new sequence on Star Tours ... do you see my dilemma? Or at Epcot (my favorite park) I love the films. Send my your pixie dust please pixiedust: :tink:

We still love the parks. We now have 4 kids as compared to 2 when we bought into DVC almost 10 years ago. Back then we only had to pay for park tickets for my husband, I and oldest daughter. Meals were a lot cheaper too. The park tickets are so expensive that we now have to go every other year and really want to get the most out of the parks. We also have decided after over a dozen trips that we want to branch out every other year to expose the kids to other parts of the country. So glad we have DVC, but we now rent points and use them for the parks every other year instead.

It's certainly cool that DVC can accommodate a variety of vacation styles. Us? We do rope drop daily if possible and stay until closing, including Evening EMH, which we always try to schedule for (Yes it's more crowded, but in the summer, evenings in the parks are awesome). Lunch and dinner are almost always in the park, and we don't hop. Been doing it for 6 years now. Arriving late Friday night this week - can't wait!

We've owned DVC since 2001. So, our 3 kids are all older than when we first purchased. We've never been commando style at Disney. When the kids were little, we came back for a nap and a swim. Now, the only one taking naps are me & DH! We still try to make rope drop when we go to a park, but then we're able to leave by 12:00-1:00, go back for lunch in the room, swimming, reading or whatever we feel like. We head to a TS dinner around 5 or 6 then a park for the evening. That's our style! Sometime we take relatives or kid's friends with us and if they aren't frequent Disney travelers, then we might stay in the parks longer for them. Once we are empty nesters, I think we might do non-park trips, but we still

First post! We just purchased and have our first DVC trip for July, but we are all Florida residents and going to WDW is just a 3 hour trip, but one of the deciding factors on buying in was that we like the Resort experience, and even our 5yo is happy to just do Thunder Railroad, SplashMtn and 7Dwarves and then go to the pool and swim all day. Planning a big weekend next year on points for the family, but we've never been (and never will) be rope droppers and the park is just one more thing to do on a get away weekend....

Been lurking for a week or so, and really appreciate the info and assistance on the boards.. thanks!

Different strokes for different folks. We.... Bought with the intention of 2 trips every 3 years.... Alternating studio and 1br. What we've found is that we are more than comfortable in a studio (especially now that there is a Murphy bed and the kids have separate beds). Our whole lives are Hustle bustle so our time at Disney is together family time so we don't have any problems cramming into a studio for 2 nights instead a 1br foe one night. My brother? Complete opposite and they need their space. Not a judgment.. Just a difference. Our neighbors have dvc.... Exact point size contract and tend to vacation at similar times so we split an owner's locker. Keep a crock pot and griddle in there to help keep food costs down (tons of easy crock pot meals to make in disney).

As with other dvc members our first few trips were rope drops.... Go hard all day and night. Now we get an AP and put a bunch of trips in the year. Go for openings and are out of the park by 11......go back for night events and fireworks or EMH. Resort times increase every trip. I look forward to spending a week or two in a quiet studio with just the wife in our retirement. (long way away). We also now see the things in others on their DIS eyes trips that we USED to do and don't miss at all.

We have just got to the same point with TS restaurants. Next trip I want to cook in the room and just do 3 or 4 favourite restaurants we got so so fed up eating out last trip

During our last trip, we never entered a park until after 4 pm. We did a few rides, had dinner and watched the fireworks. Spent the days hanging by the pool and on our AKV balcony - it was amazing! At this point, I can't even imagine spending an entire day at the parks. We have never been a rope drop kind of family so spending the evening in the parks really works for us - its cooler and the crowds have been pretty manageable. We will be back for another week in July - may try to work in a water park if we can find the time!

I think for us we have really slowed down because as a guest that now vacations at WDW a couple of times each year, what we don't do today, we can do tomorrow. The crowds and warm/hot temperatures are a downer for us, takes away from the magic.

We discovered we can vacation. Prior to our DVC it seemed more like a mission, tight schedule to get in as much as was humanly possible. While we still do FP and a few ADRs, it is much more day by day doing whatever we feel like and not feeling like we have to be in the parks by 8 and stay through the fireworks or show. We may hang out on the balcony watching the world go by, visit a different resort for lunch or dinner, swimming, golfing, walking, or enjoying some of the there activities or offerings on property. Much lower key, great feeling.

I agree with a lot of this! We have owned on and off at various resorts the last 5 years. We now own at VWL and are taking our first trip there in September, SO EXCITED. While we still majorly indulge on food with the dining plan for all 7 of us, I understand that its a way to save money by cooking or not having the plan. We only do the parks for 5 out of 12 of the days we are there, and I love our resort/exploring days. <3 I think DVC takes the "urgency to do it all" out of the equation, because we know well be back, which is awesome.

Is it the DVC that allows you to slow down or is it the increased frequency of Disney vacations? If you didn't own DVC would you take a break from Disney vacations once in a while and save some money?

i love this thread! We're still kind of commando, but don't feel the need to be in the parks the entire day. We do rope drop, ride our favorites, have a nice lunch, back to the resort for a swim. Then we we get ready to head out again, have a nice sit down dinner, then either off to another park for evening entertainment, Disney Springs or just back to our resort to hang out.

Next trip we plan on 16 days at PVB. Half that time will be non park days which I'm really looking forward to.

Like many others, we've altered how we vacation (it also helps that our kids are grown). We do rope drop, hit all the rides we can before the crowds amass, then head off to lunch somewhere. Usually, we hit park #2 loaded with our FPs and once finished, head back to the room to relax before dinner. We mostly eat out but share plates to cut the cost and because we're not usually heavy eaters. We'll hit the occasional park after dinner depending on how we feel. While we plan a lot in advance, nothing is set in stone anymore save for ADRs of which we have far fewer now. We walk up to lunches (early), and we Open Table for some of our favorite restaurants (Il Mulino, e.g.) in order to add flexibility since we can cancel those without fear of being charged a fee. It's difficult to make the World feel spontaneous, so we do what we can to keep that sense of freedom. That might seem an odd concept given we do rope drop, for example, but even that is full of possibilities. Want to do HM, BTMRR, or Space Mtn first? On to the next one wherever we feel is best (or open). We are finding we spend far less time in the parks, however, given there is no real down season anymore. We occasionally discover slow times (Jan 1 before, say, 2 p.m.), yet the sense we get is that Disney's plan to fill the parks all the time is largely working. We'll likely keep our DVC to its contractual end, but we'll enjoy the pools, Disney Springs, strolls along less traveled paths, wine on the balcony, and meals in the room more and more over the next couple of decades. As others have intimated before, each to his/her own.

What I have really like about going to WDW after purchasing a DVC at BLT is flexibility. Our kids are 18+ now and the condo gives a place to all meet up and relax. When we bring friends some people can do rope drop, some can sleep in, etc. We still do a lot of planning to get our ADRs, FP+ but we are more relaxed during our stays. DVC offers flexibility as your kids age and your vacation patterns change.

Did I write this? Had to double check there for a second. We have also been five times and I also agree that taking a mid day break allows one to enjoy the parks even more and get more out of the time one is there.

Eating out is great....don't get me wrong! But you can have too much of a good thing. Our son was diagnosed with diabetes last year and we have made a lot of changes to our diet so it is absolutely imperative that we take some control over our food choices. And of course I am utterly spoiled with a washer and dryer! I feel like I can't travel without it!

Is it horrible when the co-works ask "what did you do in Disney this year?"... "ummmm, we discovered Alaska State Troopers on Nat Geo"...true story...awesome trip :flower3:
Hilarious we did the same...they had a marathon or something going on. You didn't happen to go in late March?
