I was born in 1976.

Challenger:
I was coming in from crossing guard duty at lunch (our elementary school had half-day Kindergarten). I heard news on the radio talking about the explosion. I don't recall my teacher talking about it, but I watched the news after school.

9/11:
I was at work. After the first plane hit, I started surfing the web, and then I saw video of the second hit. I spend the rest of my day worrying.

My wife and I had just gotten off work in the News Department of a TV station, we didn't know about it until the guy who came to fix our spa told us.

I was in the control room of a TV station, Producing a local morning newscast. Lots of misinformation coming in after the first plane it, first reporters were that a fire had broken out, then that a Cessna had hit the tower.....we switch to a Network Special Report about a minute before the second plane hit. First and only story I have covered in 37 years as a Journalist where I felt sick to my stomach.

I really don't remember. I would have been in college. I remember watching the footage, but I don't remember hearing about it, initially

Was at work and a student came in and told me about it. At that point, only the first plane had hit. I called dh, but he was in class and so hung up the phone. He called me back after class and immediately said he bet it was a terrorist attack. He's a veteran and very much into politics.

I know my mom held me up to the TV, then took me outside to look at the moon, but I was too young to remember.

Studying for a final (our school gave us off for study days) at home, on the phone with a friend, and listening to the radio. We were speechless.

Evacuating from the 70th floor of Tower 2. I owe my life to Rick Rescorla. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Rescorla

wow, what a hero

Absolutely. You have to know, the Port Authority told us *not* to evacuate and Rick Rescorla overruled them. He saved thousands of lives that day.

I was in the second grade and thought the world had ended because EVERYONE was crying.

MLK was my hero, all I knew is someone killed him and I thought we'd never see life getting any better. I was 12 and I remember being very despondent.

July 20, 1969 Apollo 11,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_11

We were all in the living room waiting to see what he'd say.

January 28, 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_S...enger_disaster

I was very sick and pregnant that day. My Dad came over to give me some juice and it happened as soon as I opened the door for him. I remember just crying and crying about the teacher and her children... I always worried more about the kids than the person... it was my own fear of losing my parents.

I was in the breakroom of our radio station watching the tv. I remember pouring myself some coffee when I saw a plane in the side of the WTC. I shook my head and remembered the plane that flew into the side of the Empire State Bldg some years before. Then I saw the second plane... and I knew something was WRONG. I heard running, all of the newsmen of our AM radio station were running to get to the newsroom. I was in shock. I walked thru them to my office, closed the door and got on the DIS. I will never forget the DIS that day... :guilty:

My main concern was my cousin, who worked nearby... and I was so thrilled that my niece had left her job in WTC 2 on August 30th of that same year. She lost everyone in her job that day and is STILL traumatized with survivor's guilt. My cousin died a few years later after ingesting the air in the area. He was only 50. :sad1:

God bless him.

When I read that you all were told not to evacuate (or to go back to your offices) it just was devestating to me. I probably would have complied. :guilty:

This thread reminds me:

I remember once when I was a little girl - it was probably around 1973-1975 and if I remember correctly, it was fairly warm outside (in Michigan)- I came home from school and my mom said "Try to remember this day when you're older." I'm sure she said more, though I don't know what now. I think she was watching the news.

Can't figure out what it was, though. Why I was supposed to remember that day. :confused3

Nixon ?

I was 5 when the Challenger blew up. Don't recall it.

One note mentioned is when the Berlin wall came down in 89. My folks sat me down and made me watch it.

9/11, I woke up to go to school (college). I'm west coast so the first plane had hit. 2nd hit on the way. No one went to classes, everyone was in the common watching it on tv.

JFK I was in school as I was only 7.
MLK--didn't really know about it. I was 12 and probably had been told to get outside to play.
Apollo-I was 13 but I don't know if we watched it or not. I will have to ask some of my siblings.
Space Shuttle- I was 30 and remember watching it on TV. I felt so sorry for her kids.
9-11 our family was on vacation up north at a hotel. We were checking out that morning to go camping. We watched it on the sports TV and then my MIL's TV. We had my granddaughter with us so we ate our breakfast in the dining room and would have at least one person in the bar watching and then we would change places. My MIL insisted that we not watch it on her TV after a short time as it wasn't important. ??????????????? We went to the campground and found out later that it was a good thing we checked out as a couple of planes had to land in the town and the hotels were filled up with passengers. Also, we ended up informing some fishermen later that night who didn't know anything. It turned out that they were from the States and were in the service. They were going to pack up and get back across the border as they would have been called up. Had to tell them that the border was closed so they might as well stay the night and try the next day. Turned out they wouldn't have gotten across the next day either but they did leave the campground.
My nephew was on the phone to a company at one of the towers when the planes hit. He kept telling them to leave and they said that they were told to stay so they did. It was one of the companies that lost the most people including the people that he had been talking to.

I was in the 3rd grade and we were watching the launch live. It was terrible and confusing.

I was in a hyperbaric tank at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Nothing like being locked in a giant tank on an Air Force base when you have no idea what is being targeted. Scary, sad day.

Third grade. This is my first memory of television programming being preempted.

Literally, probably having dinner - and by then we had a small set in the kitchen that was always on. Like low-key, though, we weren't too familiar with King in my city at the time.

Summer camp in Maine; I don't remember there being any televisions, but maybe radios.

January 28, 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Challenger_disaster
I was at work (amazing how much of my life parallels low-key's), and three coworkers were listening to different radio stations via headphones. About ten seconds apart, each yelled out, "oh my god!" Our boss let one of them play the radio so we could all hear the news.

Working in the Financial District in Boston. In a relatively high-rise building. First it sounded like an accident, and when the second plane hit they knew it wasn't. They set up televisions in the conference rooms.

After the towers collapsed, most high-rises in Boston closed. I remember being on the subway with some college students who were complaining about the crowds (unusual at 11 or noon). They hadn't heard anything about the attack. They stopped complaining.

JFK- I was in second grade and remember seeing the funeral on TV. My dad was pretty disrespectful- political affiliations aside, the president had just been assassinated- but my mom was shocked and in tears. I still think one of the saddest, strongest things I've seen is watching Jackie take a young child in each hand and walk them out to watch their father's funeral procession pass by.

MLK assassination- I was almost 12. I remember watching the footage over and over on TV. Nobody could believe it... and once again dear ol' dad was being pretty disrespectful, but this time it was racially rather than politically.

Apollo 11- I was a few days shy of 13 and remember gathering in my grandparent's living room to watch this happen. I still remember hearing Neil Armstrong speak those stirring words! For months after this, every time we were outside at night, we'd all look at the moon in awe!

Challenger disaster- I was in my office while attending grad school at UMaine. Someone came running in to tell us, and I walked back to my dorm to watch the coverage. I later learned that some of my cousins, from Concord, NH, had had Christa MacAuliffe as a teacher.

9/11 terrorist attacks- I was in the basement apartment of our new home; we'd moved back to Maine a few weeks earlier, and I wasn't yet employed. DH was at work and DD was at school; I was home unpacking. I remember coming upstairs and looking at the TV, which DH had left turned on. It was on CNBC and they were showing the two towers, with smoke pouring out of one, then cutting to the footage of when the plane hit it. I was totally confused, and remember thinking that they must have been reviewing some Arnold Schwarzeneggar movie or something. I turned up the volume, listened, and then went into panic. My BIL is a flight attendant for United, based in Boston, and Flight 175 (the 2nd plane to hit the towers) was a route he regularly bid and flew. I frantically tried to contact my sister and finally got through.. to learn that he'd not bid that flight, that month, because he had a court date that morning to fight a speeding ticket! Instead of going to court, he went to Logan to try and do whatever he could, but of course there really wasn't anything any of us could do.
