What was your Give A Day Get A Disney Day Volunteer Service like?

We made "no-sew" fleece blankets for Project Linus. They go to our local neonatal unit where my twins were when they were babies. So, it was great for them to give something back. We had a lot of fun - we did a Disney movie marathon while working on our blankets!:woohoo:

We would love to be able to do this, but the area does not offer much. Hope things change as time goes by.

im in the process of doing my project for the local animal shelters. Im making about 14 fleece cat beds, 20 catnip pillows, tons of dog bandanas, and donating old towels. Its a lot of work, but they'll be donated in the names of my fiance, my aunt and I. And I LOVE sewing you I am having a great time. I think my animals are too. Theyre testing out the new accessories. :cat:

Any new volunteer experiences to share?

We did Treasure Boxes for Teachers. We had to fill a shoe box with school supplies and drop off last weekend. I was able to do one for DD8, myself, DH, and my mom and dad. :thumbsup2

We also did the fleece blankets but it wasn't for project Linus. We delivered to a church in Yucaipa along with granola bars and socks. They will be distributed to the homeless. The process was very simple and it only took about a week to get our vouchers emailed to us.

We were origionally signed up to help in a soup kitchen, then that was cancelled.. then we were going to make thank you cards for people who work with habitat for humanity. In the end we planted trees. 3... took very little time. felt like we didn't do much. But a ton of people showed up. Not everyone was there for the Disney promotion.

Are Volunteer sign up was a littlte trickey at first because I was looking for something we ll could do as a family and when hubby and I were off together. I finnally found that there was a 5K race on Saturday Feb 13th. the trick was min age was 14 ...Saturday Feb 13th was my daughters 14th birthday but the Disney rules are she had to be 14th at sign up:eek:
Well when I talked to the event person she was great help she was able to book my daughter just not conform her till the 13th.

We arived at 9:45am as requested and were given a spot along the race route our job was to tell runner were to run and cheer them on. Race was finished by 11:30am. Then we broke down the tabls and chairs from the Pancake breakfast they had there we 15 of us 12 there for the Disney we were finished by 12:30pm.

Our Disney Voucher were ready to print in 6 days. It is very cute has your name and Donald on it.

At first my daughter was bumed that she had to volunteer on her birthday but when it was over she said it was fun.:thumbsup2 We are going in June I think I might use two for the 72 off a 4 day hopper and one for the fass pass option. But I dont know which route is going to give us the best vaule.

My family and I are volunteering this coming sunday, the 28th at our local food bank garden...probably weeding and/or planting. I havent told the kids why, but they are really excited about getting out there and helping others who are in need. This may become a more regular thing for us :thumbsup2

I signed up to do a preschool maintenance day in my hometown. I didn't realize until I parked my car that the preschool was in the same buildings that I had gone to Kindergarten, Elementary school before our new campus was built, and Jr. High while our new campus was being built. Talk about surreal! The classrooms are so much smaller than I remembered.

We started at about 9 a.m. and spent 3 hours cleaning out two of the classrooms - taking all toys and plastic surfaces outside to be cleaned, wiping down every surface inside the classroom, taking inventory on all supplies. It was actually a lot of fun. Most of the families taking part were all part of the preschool co-op, but I'm pretty sure a lot of them were also there for the Disney promotion ;)

I JUST signed my daughter and I up for a local blanket making project as well. I'm just going to work 12 hours between the two of us and make as many right sized fleece blankets as we can :)

I am in the process of making fleece blankets as well. Between myself, my husband and 2 kids, I am sewing 2 and making 4 no-sew blankets. I hope to be finished by next week!

Did anyone have trouble signing up?? I registered us back in January and when I clicked on the link it gave me all the info and then I decided to add the two younger kids that would've been the right age and now it won't let me click on anything to select. So if your looking at opportunities and it says click on the info, it does nothing. But if I click from my email it shows up and allows me to select it but then it wants my info and tells me I'm already registered. I don't know how to fix this?? Anyone else experience this? Is there a way around it?

Everyone's volunteer time sounds very nice and very helpful! :) Keep up the good work!

It wasn't adding the volunteer that was the problem it was that I didn't complete the add the volunteer item before I added the extra two people and so the volunteer list went away and when I went back in it brought up a black writing and the volunteer stuff was blue and when I clicked it it took me right back to the beginning. It was so frustrating so I gave up and emailed two groups and they sent me back to the list and said to keep checking. Anyway today I just picked a volunteer group and put my DH as the primary and added all of us and it let me register again. Not sure how to delete the first set but at least we are signed up now. There was nothing in our area until April! Good thing we aren't going until May.

We tried signing up for an outdoor project that had 39 open spots and the website would not let us sign up. It kept saying "volunteer limit reached" even though it clearly hadn't. After several phone calls, the lead project guy for GAD called me and could not figure out why there was a glitch. We ended up signing up my whole family for a Binky Patrol project. I made two "adult" blankets and two "child" blankets for my whole family to turn in. It wasn't until after I turned them in that I noticed in the confirmation email that it was to be one 4'x5' blanket or two small kids blankets a person. The lady in charge was nice enough to give us all credit anyways. Our vouchers arrived via email just a few days later. It was easy work, but there was no connection with the organization. We were given the organizer's home address and were to drop the blankets off on her porch - she provided a rubbermaid box to place them in. I prefer face to face stuff and normally volunteer with Make A Wish, but since opportunities for vouchers were limited, we chose this.

I'm doing mine through Operation Binky out of Calabasass...same type of thing as Project Linus, i believe.
When I'm done, we drop them off at a fabric store there that is partnering for them. The contact person is great with communication thus far. I know Ventura County is a bit far from where you are!

It took nearly three weeks of searching the Disney Give a Day volunteer opportunities, but we finally connected. I couldn't be happier; contributing to this cause is its own reward.

The charity is Operation Showers of Appreciation at Camp Pendleton, California. They collect baby essentials for young military families. Having lived this, we well remember the tremendous difficulties and challenges. My daughter Rachel was born while my family was deployed in Germany. Two months later I was in the Gulf for Operation Desert Storm, leaving my wife and first-time mother potentially isolated overseas with a newborn. She needed a lot of help.

Disney is doing a wonderful thing with the GAD program, whatever the hiccups. Now that we know of this charity, we'll help them out every year. When the deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan started again, there was an outpouring of support for the troops. Its gone on so long that some of that support has fallen off. Young military families need more help than ever. If you are looking for a GAD opportunity suitable for the entire family, please consider donating to this cause.
