i honestly don't remember, but i do remember that candy at the local store was basicly 2 tiered in price-a nickle or a dime (the dime bars were the bigger ones that you would now pay around 75 cents for brand name bottled sodas were around 20 cents (but you got the deposit of a nickle back when you returned the bottle), stuff like shasta you could get for a dime. comic books were a real deal-10 cents for the thinner ones, 25 cents for the bigger issues.
anyone remember soda companies that had promotions with the metal bottle caps? you had to pull the cork off the top of the cap to see if you had won anything. i remember as a kid always looking into the box underneath the bottle opener at the local grocery store-we would look to see if any "crazy" adults had opened their soda and discarded the cap without checking it first.
I think my first allowance was 5 bucks. I brought my very first album. It was an record by an old group called "The Platters". before that I just brought 45 singles (remember them?) I remember it was back when every neighborhood had record stores.
I believe mine was 50 cents per week. I earned it by drying dishes (Mom washed) every evening, making my bed in the mornings and keeping my room clean, and ironing my clothes, the pillowcases and my Dad's handkerchiefs.
I don't remember what I bought, but I was not good at saving money so I'm sure I spent it on junk each week like candy and magazines, oh and 45rpm records.
I was almost 7, it was 1981, and I earned 50 cents a week. I didn't want anything in the beginning of the year, but when summer (and my birthday) arrived, I discovered Duran Duran and saved up to buy their first album.
Oh yeah! A friend of my Mom's little boy turned off the heat on their's in the middle of winter. It was like a big ice cube! They couldn't sleep in it for a couple of nights. Not sure where they slept as they didn't have any spare beds.
I don't remember my first allowance but I do remember my first pay check my mother made me buy jewelry with it lol I didn't want to but I still have that ring. Its a gold ring with sapphires and diamonds honestly it would cost much much more now and though I don't' wear it. I like that I still possess it I may do the same someday when I have a child but if its a girl I'd have her buy a gold charm bracelet so she can collect on it for years to come. Mind you my first paycheck was the accumulation of an entire summer of work they paid me at end of the summer.
I was the oldest of 5...got .25 cents for allowance a week...boy did I earn it...didn't know about child labor laws then ...I would add to my allowance from age 11 on with babysitting the neighbors kids at .50 cents an hour..I only bought Elvis Presley albums with my money and believe it or not I still have every one of them
