What was wrong with Ronald Reagan?

He was one of my favorite Presidents and I'm not a Republican.

Hope this isn't off limits, but it was on the Podcast so I figure it's fair game.

Hmmm, Pete didn't really go into the politics, I only know about Regan through the Thatcher version of events.

I like Herbert Hoover, and no one else seems to like him!

I never met Ronald Regan personaly so I can't say.

He made some good movies.

He wasn't perfect (who is? :confused3) but if I had to choose one US President in my lifetime to call "best" overall it would be him. (And not just 'cause he was the first I was old enough to vote for...)

Not a "R/D" or "C/L" thing so much as what I remember about life before/during/after his administration and how he is being remembered, treated by history (so far), etc.

And yes, he was in some pretty good films back in the day, as well. :)

Hardshell,

I had to google Slapout AL to see if it was for real and it is!! Is this really how it got its name?

Slapout, Alabama
Oscar Peeples, the town grocer in the early 1900s, was forever waiting on customers who asked for things he didn't have. "I'm slap out of it," Peeples would say. This central Alabama community, north of Montgomery, is now little more than a crossroads, with a church, bank, barber shop, and the tumbledown remains of Peeples' old store.

Yep, that's the story. It's a little-bitty farming community about 45 minutes outside of the state capital of Montgomery (where I work). We bought a small farm and orchard across from my in-laws' much bigger farm. It's peaceful and nice.

But it isn't quite as desolate as that blurb sounds -- we may only have the one caution light at the crossroads, but we have a couple of gas stations, a Piggly Wiggly (grocery store chain), a Subway, a pizza place, a good local tire/mechanic shop, etc. Just a sleepy little rural Alabama town. :)

Yup! Just what you said.

Did Pete say something bad about Ronald Reagan in the show? Did I miss something? It sounded like Pete said Reagan was a cool presence, despite disagreeing with his politics. I'm just confused by the title, that's all.

Anyway, I too like Ronald Reagan. He is one of my heroes, actually. I mean, I'm not a fan of the religious right movement that stemmed from his administration (this coming from a Christian Republican), but I thought he was a fantastic president.

I've never seen any of his movies, so I can't really comment. The only movies I've seen that were made pre-1960 are either Disney movies or It's a Wonderful Life.

Regardless of whether you do or don't like his politics I can't read the two speeches from the 40th anniversary of D-Day or either one from the Challenger disaster (the address and the eulogy) without a tear coming to my eyes and being reminded of why I am proud to be an American.

Well said.:thumbsup2

I totally agree!

He said, he didn't care for his politics very much. Nothing too bad, he didn't trash the man or anything. Of course Reagan wasn't perfect, but he pulled us out of the economic mess that was late 70's and layed the groundwork to end the cold war.

Yeah, I can see why Pete didn't like his politics. I was just confused about the title, that's all. :thumbsup2 By the way, I LOVE your screen name.

To me, even meeting a president, no matter what party, would be an event. I'm not a fan of Obama's politics, but I would jump at the chance to meet him. In that situation, you're not Republican or Democrat, but you're an American.

I dislike Regan very much due to the way he handled the emergence
of the AIDS crisis... and that is all I am going to say because I am not going to get political! :upsidedow
