What was banned at your school?

Excessive use of safety pins. It was during the punk era and we had school uniforms. Safety pins began appearing in abundance. Then the hammer came down.

soda and at one point the school's underground newspaper. with the soda removed from the cafeteria some of us (read-me) brought 6 packs and sold them at cost to friends, with the newspaper someone.................(again-me) lied to the school librarian and got the key to the copy machine 'uuum-yeah, big term paper due-need to submit multiple copies' and made multiple copies of one of the only unconfiscated copies of said newspaper to distribute.

Hooded sweatshirts. Then bodysuits for girls. Then baseball caps (or any other hat other than a winter hat which could be stored in your backpack/ locker but not worn during school hours).

Students were banned from smoking anywhere but the approved student smoking area.
Same here, in practice. I graduated in 1975 and there was an area where students smoked, but it was not an approved area. Administrators looked the other way, but made it clear that technically they could suspend anyone caught smoking there. That never happened.
One thing that did happen was one guy was known for trying to get away with wearing shirts with obscene words on them. The school would just make him turn the shirt inside out.

Girls could not wear pants unless they wore a dress or skirt over them. No sandals or facial hair.

Showing my age here... Bon Jovi t-shirts (a certain one), Spuds Mackenzie t-shirts, and rubber bands are the things that I can remember.

I also remember when I was in elementary school, our teacher banned the phrase "cable TV". When I was a kid it was a new thing in town, and we all would not shut up about it, so the teacher banned the topic or even uttering the words. :rotfl2:

I am early 90s baby so: trapper keepers, slap wristbands, those little finger skateboards that boys always played with, platform sneakers...

Those are the ones I can remember the most, at least from elementary school. I don't remember much else being banned from middle or high school but then again, I went to Catholic elementary and public middle/high.

my northern california high school had an officialy sanctioned and approved smoking section on campus. it was still in place when i graduated in '79.

public school district i attended had this in force when i was in elementary. changed their policy mid way through my 2nd grade year. mom's cheered! locally sales of little girls tights plummeted.

EVERYTHING was banned at my kid's private schools. only biggie i remember at their public high school that i recall complaining about was fleece pants. can't say i blame the kiddos, yes many a pair were technically pj's BUT they were warm and comfortable for those kids to wear on snowy days.

Nothing that I can think of. Maybe it was written somewhere that alcohol wasn't allowed, but, it wasn't really a problem that needed to be addressed in the first place. Smoking was restricted to the smoking doors, and kids stuck to it.

My daughter graduated in 2000 and I don't remember any specific rules for her schooling either. Probably drugs and alcohol but again, they weren't really an issue that needed to be addressed.

Reminds me of a story my dad told me about his junior high school days (early 60s). Apparently 10 guys chipped in and bribed the janitor to buy them one single can of beer. Split in the boys bathroom and walked around all day thinking they were drunk lol.

My Central Kentucky HS had an approved Smoking Area outside the backdoor by the gym when I graduated in '96. By the time my sister got there a few years later, it had been removed and students were not allowed to smoke on school grounds anymore.

Not cigarettes in the 80s. I didn’t smoke but still went out for smoke breaks.
