What type of retainer did your child getting after braces removed?

I have the permanent wire on my top and bottom glued to my front 6 teeth. I've had them on for about 10 years now. I had the wire break on my top right cuspid, but they just sanded it down so that it wouldn't cut my tongue and left it as is and I haven't had any problems with shifting.
