What type of professions earned over $250k a year?

I wanna clear $250k

My folks easily clear that each. One is in an executive position at a creative firm, the other is an attorney/government consultant/former politician.

And I bet they did not start out making that kind of money...

I bet they worked years to work their way up to an executive position, and to a law degree.
That's how most people get to a 250k salary.

I don't work, and my kids are grown and out of the house, that's why I'm here all the time.

My DH? He would never waste time on a message board.
He'd be studying the lastest tax code Can you figure out what profession he's in?

That's correct. I'm here all the time because technology makes it easy for me to do so and because my job requires quite a lot of computer time.

I happen to be a SAHM but I know that at least 95% of the people that my DH works with who happen to have 2 income households will easily clear the $250,000 mark. This affects a lot of people. BTW my DH doesn't spend any time on the DIS but he has boards that he visits that are aimed at his interests. People making six figures don't work 24 hours a day they have spare time just like the rest of us.

If I worked outside the home (in my previous profession), DH and I would probably be close to $250k.

IMO, it isn't so much that Obama wants to raise taxes on high-wage earners... it's that he wants to raise those taxes in order to pay for tax reductions for low-wage earners. If Obama was just proposing to raise taxes for high-wage earners and use the money to pay down the national debt, fewer people would take issue with it.

However, most folks like to think they have at least the potential to make more money. And they don't like the idea that if they work harder/longer/are luckier, that a politician wants to take away some of the fruit of their labors and GIVE it to someone who doesn't make as much money (and presumably doesn't work as hard/as long/or isn't as lucky).

This is, after all, America, where we've grown our economy on the belief that anyone can throw off the shackles of their past by getting a good education, job training, or just have a great idea and, if they work hard, can build their wealth.

IMO, our whole country needs to do more to give a HAND UP instead of a HAND OUT. We need more job creation, job training, and help with child care for working parents. And we need less of the whole "entitlement" attitude.

Yes I understand. My DH is an electrical engineer and will spend most evenings either looking at a bunch of jumbled symbols and letters (equations look like jumbled symbols and numbers to me) in books or on the internet. He does wonder off into the occasional home brewers forum once in awhile.

Also, the Obama tax hike affects those who make more than $250,000/yr who are married filing jointly, as well. Thus, you could have two six-figure incomes and clear the hurdle.

I don't think I'd hit the figure by myself (depends on bonuses this year), but with my wife's compensation added in we definitely will cross the line.

I think a lot of people I know will be in this same situation...

I'm 1/2 of an over 250K a year family. It takes both my wife and I to reach it. We both have worked for the Gov. for over 20yrs. and it took us that long to get there. I really don't want to start "spreading" my so called wealth around to folks who haven't put in the time to earn it. I am a HS grad who did 8 yrs in the service as an electronics tech, got out and turned that training into what I do today. If I can do it anybody can. You just have to "want" it and work for it, not expect sombody else to just give it to you.

Should've gone into plastic surgery or dermatology - GP's, OB's, and Pediatricians are usually NOT living large. Lots of folks in my area make over $250,000 - high COL, close to NYC.

I agree. My BIL is a cosmetic dermatologist and he makes well over $250K.

We also make over 250K. My husband owns his own consulting business.

I found it so funny to hear that we are supposedly "rich". I know so many people who makes tons more than we do-- doctors, lawyers, corporate officers, business owners, etc.

I stay home Dh is a DR. (internist) he DOES not make near 250k --my brothers did/do work for mortgage companies (one owned the co then he sold it about 2 yrs ago) and they both made well over 250k

Eh, maybe, maybe not. In some professions all the wanting and hard work in the world is not going to get you over that threshold unless you are in the right place geographically, and maybe not even then.

I'm a professional with an advanced degree, but my profession is one that is generally low-paid (and usually involves working for government in one way or another.) AFAIK, there are only about a dozen positions in it that would pay that much (and I don't mean categories of positions, I mean particular specific positions in particular places.) Right now, of all of those, only one is held by a woman, even though women make up over 90% of membership in the profession.

Most of the time if you break that threshold, you're going to do it in the private sector, not in government.

I grew up in a very economically depressed area where pay in general was pretty low. The first two people I ever knew who made this kind of money were an insurance salesman and the owner of a car dealership.

DH is in software sales & clears $250K a year but wouldn't think of being on the DIS, and he can't stand that I'm on here! I work part time for $10/hour in retail management - because I love it - it's my escape from the house & kids. In our area of the country $250K annual income is not unusual, lots of business/financial executives & professionals are in the area. I'd be on the DIS if I made a dime or a million!

Most of the jobs posted as making that amount definitely do not around here. OK, Rick Pitino does, but he's worth it.

A lot of doctors have to pay for malpractice insurance and I heard that it's quite costly. I don't know that for sure, but it's what I heard. Maybe that's why he doesn't clear $250k.

Nearly everyone in my husband's extended family is an MD. While they do very well, most doctors do not clear $250,000 a year. Maybe specialized surgeons who own part of a practice, but the average doctor/general surgeon does not.
