What type of hat do you wear in the parks?

So, we've discussed purses and strollers. How about hats?

We will be travelling to DL in mid April, and we try to be careful about the sun, so we will be wearing hats - dh especially as his hair is thinning on top & he's prone to sunburns so he'll wear his bucket hat. The boys will wear ball caps or bucket hats - whatever we find for them.

Me, however, I know the benefits of wearing hats in the sun, but hats often compete with my curly hair and give me terrible hat head.

So, I need a hat that's cute, fine with the off & on & squishing that happens when you ride rides, but still keeps the sun off my face. I'd rather avoid a bucket hat, because that's my camping hat, and I don't care about cute when camping.

I'm hoping to be inspired by what others wear!

You made me smile. My DH says I'm obsessed with my Disneyland hats. ;)
I have made a bit of a tradition to get a new hat every time we get caught in the rain at DL. I think I'm up to 9 now. I'm not much of a hat person otherwise, but I just love the ones I get there. They have some super cute ones and they are not terribly expensive. I think the most I've paid was $30 for a safari style in Adventure Land.
As far as what style is best, you can't go wrong there. DL seems to attract all kinds of hat wearers. Go for what is comfortable to you. I have learned to not worry about crazy hair at DL. No one cares what your hair looks like there. Just have fun.

Check out San Diego hat company! I just love everything I've ever bought of theirs. So lightweight. I have a pack able roll up one that is a sun hat with open top so works great with a pony tail !!

I do like my Disney hats I buy too!

My ds and nephew got awesome Mickey hats this trip with flip down sunglasses built in!!

Being a guy, I won't be able to help you, but I just had to post about my Indiana Jones hat. DGF got it for me the first time she went to DLR as an adult with her family, and I wear it nearly every trip now; on the trips I leave it behind, I usually miss it. It's definitely been battered for it, but it's the soft crushable kind that springs back no matter what. It's awesome and it's literally the only hat I own and will wear, I'm not a hat person.

For what it's worth, DGF has curly hair and I think she looks cute when she wears my hat. Dunno how badly it messes her hair though.

I love my Wallaroo Casual Traveler that I got from REI. It's microfiber, dries quickly if wet, and you can do different things with the large brim...up, down, etc. But there is no stiff structure in the brim so it is completely crushable. In fact I love it so much I have it in 2 colors...light blue and camel. I also have a Solar Bucket from Sunday Afternoons. Very light, and has a string if it's windy.

I also have curly hair so I know your dilemma well. Not only is it an issue with the compression, but I also have very thick hair and the curls add to my head circumference making my head huge! I cannot usually wear normal size women's hats because they simply won't fit. Not only that, but I find that my head overheats too much with a hat that covers the crown of my head.

I am subject to migraines and direct sunlight is a primary trigger for me so I searched for suitable hat for a long time. I finally found a visor hat at DL that had an adjustable strap (so it would fit my huge head). It doesn't cover the crown of my head so I still stay nice and cool, and best of all it shades my eyes so I get far fewer migraines than I do without a hat.

I still get a few frizzies because the band compresses my hair in a strip but it's not really noticeable.

They had the same visor in the Mad Hatter shop last year when we were at DL. It is a mottled pink pattern with a pink Mickey head embroidered on the front.

My mom always wears hats to avoid sun exposure, I believe she purchased this one at Walmart for less than 10 dollars. I know she packed in her luggage last summer to Cancun and it bounced back to shape with no problem.

I made sun hats for my kids. They will probably fall off on some of the rides, but they will squish up easily into a backpack. Probably wouldn't be suitable for an adult, though!

I have always worn ball caps in the past, but I am also trying to find a more stylish option this year to go with my advanced age. ;)

I wear a Wallaroo too. We're at Dland in July or August every year so I always bring my big brimmed Wallaroo and wear my spf 50. The Wallaroo is completely crushable and water resistant and fabric breathes well. I have v thick and wavy hair so I just wrestle it into to braids which fit nicely under my hat, and this also keeps the hair off my neck so all is is nice and cool back there.

Usually a Disney cap or an ear hat. But you have to remember classic and many other ear hats don't offer sun protection, so you have to make sure you wear it wisely/use sun screen.

Most recent trip, I started out with my yarmulke, actually, but the sun quickly made me replace that with my favorite Disney cap (from the 50th Anniversary, and hey, anything that covers the top of my head works--for rel. reasons I don't go out in public bare-headed.) I got a new classic ear hat (so much better than they used to be), but only managed to wear it one day before the sun drove me back under my 50th cap. I seriously wanted to get one of the new Red Car Trolley Conductor ear hats, though--they're very cool looking and have a brim to block the sun.

I just wear a women's baseball cap, but I tie my hear up in a ponytail so that hat hair is less obvious when I take it off. When I want to take it off for good at night I just use a small, folding travel brush to fix my hair. It works for me. However, if you do this, you have to remember to put sunscreen on your ears and neck since tying your hair back will leave them exposed.

I have "puffy" if not entirely curly hair, so I understand your problem.

I always buy a hat at Disneyland. They have had some very cute baseball cap type hats I've worn in the past, and Adventureland, as someone else mentioned, has quite a selection of other styles. Even though I'm female, I've worn an Indiana Jones hat a few times, and some of their other selections.

As a southern California resident, however, I don't always take the best care with sun exposure because it's just always sunny in spring and summer. I often just go with a Mickey ear hat for my scalp, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Rubygoose, those hats are adorable! I'd consider wearing one and I'm outside the target age range. :flower3:

I don't have curly hair/don't worry about hat head. I like to wear a straw cloche-ish/bucket style-ish hat...it doesn't offer the best coverage, but I like how I look in them.
