I'm using white 100% cotton T-shirts. I'm leaning towards purchasing the dark transfers based on what I've read on this board, but I'm open to changing my mind depending on what people post here.

Looking for opinions on brand of paper and whether you preferred the light transfer paper or dark transfer paper of that brand.

This will be my first time trying to make T-shirts.

Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

I just made my first transfer t-shirts today. DISigns by Kellybell. Thanks!! I'll post these pics in her name thread as well.

I went with dark transfer paper as recommended by many people on this board. Since we are leaving in 2 short weeks, I just went to my local JoAnn's Super Store to purchase the paper.

In the quilting section, I purchased a brand called Transfer Magic - Ink Jet Transfer to Dark. I think this pack was about $8.99. I used a 40% off coupon. Each sheet can print 2-3 designs depending on the size.

The package came with (3) 8.5 x 11 inch sheets plus 1 silicon pressing sheet. I used 100% cotton shirts that I prewashed. I rounded the corners of each transfer. I used a very hot iron on a flat surface with lots of pressure.

Light transfers have a clear background - which means if you put them on white tshirts, it will show the white through but the same goes for colored shirts - for example - on a red shirt, all white areas of the design will be red. So if you plan to use any color shirt besides white and there is any white in the design, you want to be sure and use dark iron on transfers. Another difference is that the light transfers are shiny and often require you to flip/rotate the design before printing. Dark transfers have more of a matte finish and often do NOT require flipping. The color on a dark transfer also seems more vibrant than with the light transfers. I prefer using dark transfers for all my shirts, including white tshirts.

I have tried many brands of dark transfers and after trying and testing for about two years have found the BEST dark transfers on the market. See my webpage if you are interested. (link in my signature) There is also a place on my website where others from here have posted their feedback about the transfers, so be sure to read this as well.

Because I do not use light transfers, I cannot recommend any brands. Hopefully some others will stop by and help with that info.
