Hello all!

I've read some other posts about what to wear to Disney World in August, but I have a wrinkle. I hate wearing shorts... and I know better than to wear jeans as I don't want to die of a heat stroke or anything. My lower legs tend to itch when I get hot/wet which is why I like long pants, but I'm trying to fix that before this trip. I've bought some cute linen/cotton crops- are these going to be alright, should I think of canceling this trip and planning for a slightly cooler time? (I still have a week or so to cancel without penalty) I've been to Disney a few times, but mostly in Spring, so Summer will be new.

Any tips/ideas are appreciated!

Thanks!

I usually stick to longer shorts or capris. When we first started going, I wore maxi dresses. This year, I bought a bunch of Disney themed dresses from Hot Topic and Torrid. I am plus sized and middle aged, so I used to shy away from these, but after experiencing the crazy humidity and temps last year, I'm going for it. You can wear cute capri leggings underneath if you feel uncomfortable. I'll bring extra performance capris for those fully rainy days, and plenty of bike shorts to wear under the dresses in case of strong breezes.

long maxi's with bike shorts to prevent chub rub, I like skirts myself. but i will wear shorts as long as they are not too short or too snug. i do have a few more flow shirts that i will wear capri leggings under as well

Only you can make the decision about canceling and rescheduling for a more pleasant time of year based on your circumstancses but IMO....

I could not imagine wearing anything but drifit shorts, sports bra and top to the parks in August.

I took DD end of last August because I do not take my kids out of school for vacations and that time frame is the least busy school holiday and we were able to get a good deal.

I'm going again with DD to Disney one last time this August because again it's really are only option ad far as when best for us to go.

If you have issues with the heat and you're not penned in to a certain time frame like us I would most definitely pick a different time of year to go so you can enjoy the parks in comfort.

I would also be concerned in your situation that on top of just suffering as all of us do in the August heat your legs will be very uncomfortable because you will sweat in those pants and the heat and humidity is unrelenting and unforgiving and you will likely be itchy because your legs will never dry in the parks.

I'd try and look for some misting fans, or sporting goods stores have water bottles that spray water...something like that to help you keep cool. Also try and make a loose plan to alternate outdoor and indoor rides and shows to stay comfortable, if you decide to go. I try to not travel in the summer whenever possible, but when I have to the best thing I can do is plan ahead. Pack different kinds of clothes in case things don't work, and if something does, wash it and wear it again. Cullots, split skirts, maxi dresses in fabrics that breathe...there's a lot of options, but it's hard to say what's most comfortable for different people. I like lightweight knit long pants sometimes since it keeps the sunburn away.
Best wishes!

Avoid denim- it shrinks and clings when wet, & takes forever to dry. Wear water-friendly shoes, such as Teva sandals. Not having miserably wet shoes is a big help when you get caught in a summer rainstorm.

I recommend sticking with August as crowds have been reported to be unusually low this summer.

I love Dri-Fit material! Look for athletic wear made with that type of fabric. It's also called performance or moisture wicking fabric. Check out Sparkle Skirts too. Look for them online.
I wouldn't cancel/postpone your trip! It will be hot but there are plenty of opportunities to find relief from the heat. You can do it!

Look for pants designed for backpacking camping/hiking. They'll often be convertible, with zips or snaps or whatever to become shorts, but you don't have to do that if you're not comfortable. However they are extremely lightweight, dry quickly, and pack/wear well. Often have sun protection as well. Columbia, Northface, Eddie Bauer, REI, etc. would be brands and stores you'd want to be looking at. I'll warn you, they aren't cheap, $70-150 easy. But linen/cotton will take forever to dry once wet (summer in FL = afternoon downpours, I once walked around in over a foot of standing water in Epcot), and wrinkles terribly!

I got these for my upcoming trip.

They are extremely light weight and comfortable. I've only worn them a few times so I can't comment on how well they will hold up but the quality seems good for the price. So check out the Made for Life (active wear) brand at JC Penney. They have several different Capri and pant styles.

We have been there in August a couple of times and it can be brutal. Here's what we learned: Avoid clothing that is made of mostly cotton. It just doesn't breathe. We picked up some shirts that are made of the moisture wicking material. I would get them in a size that doesn't cling to you. You want to allow air movement as much as possible. Check the "active wear" section at Target. They usually have some cute "work-out" tops that would work really well for this purpose.

I also tried one of those cooling towels that you wear around your neck and it proved to be a life saver for me. Some people don't like them, but I did.

The other thing we learned: take a break in the afternoon and go back to your room. This gives you a couple of hours to really cool down. Then go back out in the evening when it has started to "cool-down" a bit.

We are going at the end of august and I'm not sure what to pack either. I'm leaning towards light dresses with bike shorts to stop the chub rub. I bought some light flows tanks and was thinking of wearing legging capris with them. So hard to know what will work best.

We went last August and we said never again. It was brutal. If you can easily change your trip to a cooler time then I would do that. Otherwise wear sweat wicking material.

The big thing people don't do is wear loose, flowing fabrics. Your clothes need to be loose and non-binding. Size up - for example, I will buy my sports bras a band size larger, just to get them a little looser for summer wear. I buy my shorts 2 sizes up, for the most part, just so they are loose and comfy. (Although I have to watch this. Sometimes I buy too loose, which is fine for a casual meander around Magic Kingdom all day, but not great for a hard 5 hour hike.) I never wear tight t-shirts when I know I'm going to be out and about in the heat all day.

There are a lot of more specific tips, but that's the big one. Get comfy things that don't bind anywhere, aren't heavy and breathe.

That said, Columbia omni-freeze zero, omni-shade and omni-dry garments and Under Armor heat gear clothing rock my world. (Ebay is my main source.)

We enjoy late August actually! It's hot at home, so no different in Florida (the humidity is high though).

I like sundresses, some shorts, and will likely bring one pair of capris.

Don't be surprised, though, that in the evening it's nice to have a sweater or hoodie! It can cool down after dark, plus in air conditioning I like to have a light sweater with me!

I also agree to wear sandals that can get wet; I wear Chacos ones with good arch support. It usually rains in the afternoon for a while, but rarely for very long.

We visit in August a lot because of other family member's schedules. It certainly would never be my first choice. I do agree that moisture-wicking materials are important since with humidity like you'll find in August you need to help your skin breathe. Cotton is normally great, but not under those circumstances.

Taking a break really does help. That type of weather is extremely taxing. Breaking mid-day is very refreshing; you are not in the parks during the hottest part of the day. Even heading to a resort for lunch helps a lot. I try to go back to our resort, shower and take a nap. The kids head to the pool, which they really enjoy. Anything that is restorative and cool works like a charm.

Summer at WDW is doable; be aware of the challenges and arrange your plans accordingly.

Biggest lifesaver for me along with wearing capris is a neck fan I never go to the parks without it.

Last time we went in August, I found it didn't matter what we wore we were hot and sticky. This trip I am going to try to wear looser fitting tank tops, drink lots of water and walk through the air conditioning along the way.....

Yes, I agree about walking through a/c.

We detour through stores a LOT in August! It helps a ton.

We are also going in August also and know the humidity is going to be bad!

I typically wear skorts (skirts with a built in short under it) to the parks because I can get in and out of rides without trouble, they dry quickly and if I'm going from the park to a restaurant, I look nice! :D

Most are mine are from eddie bauer (travex).
