What to wear in August

What type of shorts is your preference, how would mesh work out shorts work over denim or khaki???

I can't stand tank tops because the tops of my arms are fat. :teeth: I am planning to wear cotton T-shirts and twill shorts. The "active wear" shorts tend to be TOO short and I feel like a dork in them.

I am planning to bring 2 outfits for every day for each person in the family. I don't want to be stuck doing laundry AT ALL. (Well, until we get home. Then I'll be doing laundry for a week.)

I think during the day I'll wear a basball cap and sunglasses with NO make-up, just sunscreen. When we go back for a break midday I will shower, change, and look more presentable for dinner. I'm not bringing any skirts. I think I only own one skirt, and it's not appropriate for summer.

Feh. In August, we, my DD and I, go to the park in our tankinis, with shorts on-we have wet/dry canoe shorts and Teva sandals, and we get wet wherever we can. We are from Michigan, and wet is the only way we can handle the heat. We also bring a change of clothes, which we store in a locker, so we can eat indoors without freezing. I don't care how we look-we love to do the parks this way-there are so many places to get wet. We once rode Kali River Rapids 8 times in a row, then walked around until dry. :dance3:

When you think of hot weather you think of desert sands, right? What do the desert nomads wear and why? They wear loose, long, flowing clothing. Loose - to let in air, Long- to prevent sun and dust burn, and flowing-to circulate air. They wear turbans to absorb sweat and to prevent sun from burning their brains out. Yes, we think of taking off clothes, but those who live with heat and sun all the time think of putting loose, long, flowing clothes on!

If you want to be comfortable in Orlando in August, the best thing to wear is a self-contained bubble suit that is climate controlled. You should get the clear plastic dome to attach so that your head stays cool, too!

Seriously, light colors, seersucker or some other light fabric. And drink lots of water - it helps you stay cool.

Good luck! :)

I just bought some of those great athletic (Nike, Wilson, Adidas) tank tops and Ts that have the "keep cool"/no sweat type feature at our TJ Maxx for 9.99! Yeah...now I can get my suitcase packed early!!

As a runner, I have a ton of tanks and tees! Think "Cool Max" and similar material that wick away water. Stay away from cotton which absorbs and holds water. Light colours, loose fitting. :thumbsup2

Our local Dick's Sporting Goods stores have all their store brand name (don't know that that name actually *is* sorry) "wicking" t shirts and tanks on sale for $4- 5 for kids' sizes and $10.99 for men's. Heard this from a girlfriend last night; her husband is a field hockey coach and he swears by them. She mentioned that they had no selection to speak of in ladies' so she got herself some in smalled men's sizes.

I have bought a bunch of stuff from Dick's in their "store brand" and been very happy with longevity and quality and fit-- its not Patagonia, but I'm no longer single and dropping $60 on work out tops for myself, either! ;)

This advice came from my sister that lives in Florida. Coming in July, Aug, Sept?

Go into your bathroom, close the windows & turn off fans, run a hot shower for about 20 minutes, then jog in place for 10 minutes. Still want to come to Florida in the summer? Then dress however you think you can stay cool in that type of weather!!

Tanks with built in bras...can't stand wearing bras in that heat! Also any shorts but denim and nothing too tight. We usually wear running shoes with light socks for most of the day and keep sandals in a locker until later...it feels sooo good to switch shoes. One more thing..be prepared to perspire...it's inevitable!! :sunny:

For the ladies out there going in August, I too will be there. I just recently bought these tank tops from Target, they are champion C9 and they are the dry-fit material around ($10). The back of them are all mesh as is the shoulder and the front is the dry-fit that wisk away moisture. I found them to be very cool and comfortable. Also you can't see your bra strap either.

Target also sells the same material shirts for men (around $10) and boys (not quite $10, I think $7 or $8), got both for dh and ds by Champion C9.

They don't make them for girls, not quite sure why, dd would really like them.

You can get similiar shirts by Nike for like $25/30 and Dicks has their own brand, but they still cost more than the C9 shirts at Target.

They make shorts too, but I didn't get those.

Got myself plenty of those Champion shirts and shorts. Wore them to a local amusement park where we rode a water ride where you get SOAKED and the clothing dries out very well.

Also, Target carries the CoolMax socks that help wick moisture away, too.

We were at WDW last August and I HATE hot weather. We did have lots of fun and kept as cool as possible, walking thru stores, going on ride that have indoor a/c waiting areas and ride and getting free ice water frequently from the coke stands. As far as clothes goes, the kids wore shorts and t-shirts, although my son had some sleeveless kind of shirts, not quite tanks. For myself, loose leg type capris (now you could get some gauchos too) and loose fitting t-shirts. I can't wear tank tops for any length of time in the sun or I'll fry like a lobster. I wore shorts on the first day and got some weird rash. Someone on here has said that it's some sort of a sun+blacktop= weird rash.

is it going to be as bad at the end of Sept as it is in August???

I have to disagree here. Florida or SC as where I live isn't anything like the desert. The desert has a DRY heat not the steambath type of heat we have in the southeast. The least amount of clothes is the way to go. Long and flowing will be sticking to you like a second set of skin within minutes.

I like the one post that talks about going into your bathroom with the hot shower going and running around a bit. THAT is very accurate! It feels like a steam bath outside. Less is best.

As far as the end of Sept. compared to the end of Aug. goes, you will notice a big difference. August is THE hottest month. End of Sept. will still be very hot, but not quite as miserable! Just watch out for the hurricanes in September.

I think I must be nuts...I love the hot weather. :thumbsup2 I'll admit that by about 2 in the afternoon in August, I'm not as fresh as I'd like to be. :rotfl: Tanks and shorts with LOTS of sunscreen for me. My DD3 loves little cotton sundresses and wore them almost everyday last year during our August trip.
