Ok, planning our 15th wedding anniversary vow renewal for July 2008 at the S/D beach. We are having an intimate ceremony with about 10 family members. I just don't know how formal to go? And where to go for a dress? Obviously, no veil, or long train. I would like to wear white, but something that doesn't "SCREAM" wedding dress. Any suggestions? :goodvibes

I would check out jcrew.com. They have a wedding and party section on their website and offer dresses in many styles and in many colors including ivory. And the majority of them are reasonable priced. And they don't necessarily scream wedding. Give 'em a shot! I used to really like jessica mcclintock for semi-formal dresses, but her designs have gone a bit extreme for me in recent years. I'm a simple girl. Good Luck!

Roozlilone, congrats on your upcoming vow renewal!

As to what to wear, that truly is a personal decision that only you can make. I have seen vow renewal photos where the bride was dressed to the nines in full wedding regalia (including a tiara, veil, and gloves), and I have seen other vow renewal photos where the bride was wearing a simple pantsuit. If you have a secret desire to wear a particular type of garment, by all means wear it. It is your wedding anniversary and you should wear whatever your heart desires. Listen to your heart.

For my vow renewal, I wasn't sure what I wanted to wear. My mother actually purchased a dress for me. She lives in the Midwest (while I live on the West Coast) and one day a package arrived. Inside it was a floor-length column dress in a taupe color. The material had gold threads running through it. There was a bolero jacket too, but I can't remember if it was made of the same material or of a different material. The dress was lovely and fit beautifully, and I was honestly quite relieved to have the dress decision made for me (yeah, the noise that you are hearing is the sound of a chicken *clucking*!). I had really been dreading shopping for a dress and my mother knew that.

Then about a month or two prior to my ceremony, I decided that I should find a dress that would make me look a little bit more like a bride. My fear was that none of the staff who would be working my event would be able to pick me out as the "bride" rather than as a guest. If something went wrong and needed my attention, I wanted to ensure that the staff would know exactly who I was. And so I wound up stopping by David's Bridal one day with my husband and our daughter. Within an hour or two, I had a very simple dress that I thought was a little better suited for a vow renewal. I'll post a photo of it below:

The dress came with a detachable train which I chose not to wear. I also chose not to wear a tiara or a veil. It was simply me and my dress on the night of my 20th wedding anniversary. It worked out very well since the dress was comfortable and easy to move around in.

So, that is what I did. Others have taken a more elaborate route -- and also a more simple route. I found something that suited me just fine. You will find something that suits you just fine, too, have no fear.

Before I end my post, I thought I'd mention that while I was shopping at David's Bridal that day, my husband picked out the exact same dress for me. When we entered the store, we split up. When we met up about thirty minutes later, I about died when I saw that he had the exact same dress in his bundle of dresses. And that was the dress that I wound up purchasing. After 20 years of marriage, my husband knew me quite well. ;)

what a lovely story!!! you looked lovely on your anniversary!

i'm a huge fan of david's bridal! i think they are SO EASY to work with, not perfect, but very easy! there was another thread on here about dressing for vow renewals and there was a df who posted the dress his wife was going to wear for theirs and it was fantastic!

what a lovely story!!!

Thanks, Caryndisneydiva, whenever I think of my dress, I always forget about the part where the two of us chose the exact same dress. No other dress in our bundles was identical, just that one.

I agree. They were very nice and extremely helpful. And the sales person who was working with me knew exactly how the dresses ran. As she looked through my bundle of gowns she'd say, "That one runs small; I'll get you a larger size. That one runs large; I'll get you a smaller size." And so on. I was very impressed.

When it came to my dress, she said that it ran small and she didn't think it would fit me. Sadly, there were only two dresses in that style and both of them were in the exact same size. I decided to try it on anyway since it was the only dress that I really wanted. When the sales person zipped it up, the dress fit beautifully. She seemed genuinely surprised and apologized for misjudging my size. I told her not to worry about it (I was wearing baggy clothing that day).

Since no alterations were needed, I took the dress out of the store with me that day. I was quite relieved to have a dress that fit well, especially so close to my vow renewal. *Phew!*

i'm sure this won't fit in with the beach theme, but my husband and i eloped the first time and told family after. this time, for our 10th anniversary, and much to my mom's dismay, we are still doing it our way. football jerseys and jeans all around. there will be no dress on me. i think for an vow renewal it should be fun. i watched my sister go insane trying to get everything jsut right, and freaking out the night before. i will not have any of that.

Congrats, Kxmeeh! Your outfits sound perfect.

One of my best friends got married amongst the redwood trees. It was a gorgeous venue and totally "them." She chose to wear a tea-length, ivory-colored dress while her husband & the groomsmen wore tux jackets, tux shirts, bow ties, and cummerbunds. Their bottom halves, however, were dressed in brand-new Levi blue jeans and cowboy boots. It was a fun compromise that the bride & groom reached in the weeks leading up to the wedding. Their photos were adorable, too. I think the men wore cowboy hats for them (but I don't believe they wore them for the ceremony).

Roozlilone, here is a website that shows all sorts of dresses for a beach type of wedding: click here. Perhaps it will give you a few ideas.

Here are two more websites with photos of various dresses for a beach type of affair: click here and click here.

Surf the 'net (or buy bridal magazines) and get a feel for what you think you might like. Then when you've got a few dresses in mind, take photos of them with you to your local bridal shops and major department stores. Show the sales people your photos and see if they have something comparable to offer. I'm hopeful that you'll find just the right dress without too much trouble.

I went through the same quandry. I already had the formal white wedding the first time around and wanted something more fun and "us" for the vow renewal. Ours is for our 10th anniversary and our kids will be a perfect age to have a great time themselves. We decided to dress in the Disney characters we liked best. Our son (the best man) is dressing up like Jack Sparrow and planning on not giving up the ring so easily. Our daughter (maid of honor) is dressing up like the fanciest Cinderella around, and our baby (flower girl) will be Tinkerbelle spreading pixie dust along our path. DH and I are not wearing costumes but more "inspired by" kind of outfits. He's wearing a formal Indian suit (like Alladin's white one) and I'm wearing a yellow dress (like Belle, a fellow bookworm).

I found the best idea for me was to look for quinceanera (sp?) dresses. They are very princessy dresses for Mexican sweet 15 parties. But they come in all kinds of colors. There will be no mistaking that I am "the bride", but we won't have a repetition of the wedding photos we already have around the house.

This place had fabulous dresses:

That sounds like a great idea. MY DDs will be in our VR too- have to keep that in mind. DH has already said he is wearing a Goofy vest...

I found the perfect dress, I just fell in love with it....I tried others on, but kept coming back to this one... I ordered it yesterday!

Roozlilone, congratulations! The dress looks gorgeous. Thanks for sharing a photo of it with us. Now you can relax and get back to planning the rest of your upcoming S/D beach event.

Like everyone has said... wear what makes you comfortable. We are planning a vow renewal for June 2008. We went super simple the first time (blue jeans for him and simple dress for me), so this time we are going all out. Dh and two sons (13 and 3) want to wear tuxes with custom made mickey material vest. Oldest dd (14) has a blue ball gown picked out and youngest dd (10) has a yellow ball gown picked out. I havent decided for myself, but I know I want something fabulous. Not sure if it will be white or not. I tend to wear red or pink alot, because it is a good color on me, so if I find a red or pink dress I like, I'll wear it.
As long as you like what you're wearing that is all that counts.

Here is a pic of my wife's dress, we renewed our vows on Castaway Cay last week, we were both barefoot...

she did a good job on the dress, it's lovely! i think you mentioned in a previous post that she copied it...do you know who the original designer was?

Demetrios...It is not the same dress, but short skirt idea is the same...

The original Demetrios dress was $4500.00, she was able to find this dress for around $1000.00 and the semstress charged $45.00 for the hem. Plus, my wife was too big in the bust area for the Demetrios dress, it did not fit her like she liked....

she looked fantastic! i love the idea, i'm going to use it (but in black) for a christmas party i have to go to!
