What to save for memories on day of babies birth

I saved a newspaper, hospital wristbands, the foot/hand stamped cards, discharge and any other papers relevant to my kids, baby announcements Iincluding newspaper and hospital's online announcement), cards and printed out emails from friends, balloons (the mylar type), photos of flowers sent, the outfits my kids wore home, the little hat and an outfit they wore in the hospital, any certificates (ie hearing screen), ultrasound video/pictures, etc. Some things went into a first year scrapbook where I can document all sorts of things like dr visits, teeth, growth, journal, news events, cost of items (can save receipts). I also store all the photos I take on the computer, back them up on disk, and at the end of every year I burn them on to a disk. Everything goes into our safe or safe deposit box in case of fire, etc. Ok this might be gross but I also saved the umbilical cord stump. Hey its what connected them to me for 9 months!

For the rest of the first year, I save first holiday cards, christening items, first birthday balloons/invites/cake toppers, any big time news clippings. Down the road, if theres room Ive saved first haircut snips, the quarter my son swallowed, artwork (though ideally I would like to scan them and save them on disk so they dont pile up), any other hospital bands we collect, etc.

A few other items you could include:

- current ad for real estate to show how much houses cost when baby was born
- current grocery store receipt or ad
- picture of the family's current car(s), house, workplace
- article about the current Olympics

- the current Happy Meal toy (haha - fun to look back on how those have changed)

Have fun...it will be so special when baby grows up to look back on this gift!!!

Thanks for all these great suggestions. Jack Douglas was born on Thursday, Feb. 9th, and so far the things I have collected are...

That daily local newspaper, the parking ticket from the hospital parking garage, e-mails that my Aunt sent earlier that day to keep us informed of the progress of his birth, magazines, and tons of pictures. I am also going to get some Olympic items since the opening ceremonies was the night after he was born (his Mom watched it in the hospital).

One idea that I missed out on, but would be a great idea for anyone else about to give birth - have a guest book for your visitors to sign when they come to visit you in the hospital. My cousin had lots of friends and family coming to the hospital to see baby Jack, but I didn't think until too late how nice it would have been for her to have a little guest book.
