Okay, this may be a strange question, but my cousin will be giving birth to her first child either later today or tomorrow (they induced her at 9am this morning). What things should I save from the day of his birth for him to keep in his baby box as he gets older. I know to save the daily newspaper, but are their other, less obvious things that I haven't even thought about? I thought it might be neat for him to have a "day of birth" box with little keepsakes from his original birth day. I have kept a copy of all of the e-mails that I am receiving keeping me up to date on the progress of his birth, maybe I can put those in a little book. Any other suggestions? You all have such great ideas!

My hubby is a tecnie so he bought the latest technie magazine so our child will know what things were like then.

What I have done, although its more for the year than the actual day is to buy a mint coin set from the US Mint. You can order them at usmint.gov. I don't think the 2006 is on sale yet, but it makes a nice keepsake. All the different state quarters and one of each coin. The set is about $20-$25, in a nice presentation box.

Thanks for posting this question as I am expecting my second baby on March 4th. When I had my daughter I saved the newspaper and somewhere on-line I had found a website that would show what things (milk, gas, movies, etc) cost that year.

Keep the ideas coming!

For all 3 of my kids I saved the calendar page from the hospital room. You know the 1 day at a time kind. I always had a private room.

I also did the coin set for my youngest.

DH made a video tape of the day dd was born. Not of the actual birth, but he taped the usual, grandparents and whatnot. But what everyone has always commented on was that he went outside and taped "the day" because it was November and unusually sunny, so dd can see the weather, the outside of the hospital, etc. on the day she was born.

What a great idea! Too bad my DS was born a year ago today! :) I forgot to do a lot of those things in all of the excitement of the day. It is nice of you to want to do this for your cousin!!

That is so thoughtful. When you are the one going through the experience, you cannot gather all of these things. It is like trying to take pictures when you host a party. These are all great ideas.

I saved several newspapers, the number 1 CD single and album of that week and bought a coin set of the year. Hope I remember to do the same for no 2 due in July!

I saved the front page of the newspaper of the day my DD6 was born. I looked at it the other day and ironically the school she now goes to celebrated it's 50th anniversary on the day she was born.

As gifts I have given a keepsake box. Decorate the lid of a nice Rubbermaid or other large plastic container using paint pens. Put in the newspaper from the day (local and USA today), several magazines (I did People, Time, Newsweek), a mint coin set (we purchased these for our kids too), Farmer's Almanac, Calendar from that year (you can find these at $1 outlets sometimes). I make sure I use a large plastic tub so that the family can add to it as the years go on (birthday momentos, newspaper clippings of momentous events that happened as they grew up (our children have a newspaper from Sept. 11 even though it will never mean the same to them as it did for us), school keepsakes, etc.

We already have one container full for each of our children and they are 6 and 8. And I've slowed down quite a bit. I figure I might fill 1 or 2 more containers with pieces of "their life" by the time they leave the nest.

I saved the days newspaper, bracelets from the hospital, a football with the babies birth info in which the midwife signed, the first baby cap, my husband made a picture of my son asking guest to wash their hands before touching the baby for the hospital which we kept and I also kept the little tiny t-shirts the hospital puts your baby in. I even went overboard and saved the yard sign of a stork announcing his birth. I have no idea what we are suppose to do with this thing now, but I still don't have the heart to throw it away.
I tried to save everything. My own mother didn't save much with me and I really wish I had those sort of memento's.

My girls' babybooks both had a place where you could stick a stamp. That way you will always remember what stamps cost when you were born.

I agree, it is so thoughtful. Gather as much as you can, it will be a busy time for the new mom & dad and they will appreciate this so much.

I wish someone did this for me :)

I saved the front page of the newspaper, her new born hat that they give them and the wrist tag they gave us both. I also dried out a floral arrangement that given to us..a few roses and kept those. Sniff, sniff...brings back such good memories!

Thats a great idea.

Maybe you could take a picture of the local gas station sign, so they would know what gas cost then.

Save the TV guide so they know what was on TV that day.

Save the movie listings so they know what was in theaters that day.

Also, maybe grocery adds are fun, because it would give them an idea of the different food prices.

I saved the nicest basket one of the flower arrangements sent to me came in and my DD has used it as a Easter Basket ever since.
Oh and I mailed the President and First Lady a birth announcement for my DD and they sent back a very nice card congratulating us that was signed by them both. (I had also done this for our wedding)

My mother saved several of the floral containers from when I was born (back then they didn't just use glass vases! :) ). When my son was born, she brought me roses in a pewter vase that my dad had brought her roses in when I was born. When my daughter was born, she brought me flowers in a cute "baby ABC block" container that I had received when I was born.

So, something to save for the next generation! It was a very special gift for me!

I wish this thread had been around when my children were born -- I would have saved/done some of the things that are being mentioned! :)
