DH and I will be visiting California for the first time in mid-September. We'll spend a day or two touring LA, travel up to Santa Ynez to visit a winery or two, and then a few days at DL. What types of clothes will we need need - mostly shorts, or does it get cool in the evenings?

We have always been fine in shorts during the day and a light jacket in the evenings.

Were going in September too.. was wondering the same thing

DH and I were at DL last year Sept 17-21. It was pretty warm during the day, got up to low to mid 80's, I believe. We wore shorts and tees mostly and got out a light jacket for evening. DH was using an ECV due to ACL knee surgery that he just had two weeks prior, he could cruise around at top speed but I had to run to keep up. Made me sweaty! Boy was I was wishing for cooler weather:lmao: I did a weather search for past years at that same time of year. It seems last year was a little unseasonably warm. We are going the same time this year and I'm hoping for just a little bit cooler weather. Although maybe I won't care if I don't have to run! Hope the weather is good for you.:goodvibes

We went last year in September and we did use sweatshirts late at night on a couple of the nights. Typically, the closer you get to the coast the cooler it will get overnight. I would think you would be fine with shorts and either sweatshirts or jackets for early mornings or late nights. September does have shortened hours so you might catch yourself not needing them at all. There is a weather site www.accuweather.com and it will show you up to 15 days out from your travel times. Of course, forecasts can change when you try to look that far ahead. :-)

Thanks everyone. I'll try to pick up a few new pairs of shorts this week, if the stores haven't replaced them with winter clothes already!

It gets cool in the evening? I was expecting September to be hot and the evenings to be a little cooler but not jacket weather. :confused3

Cool to me is anything below 75 degrees, but I live in AZ!

It's all relative. My husband would have a very difficult time in Arizona. Me? I like the heat. I can't stand winter. Only penguins should live in the snow.

We'll be packing light jackets but I doubt we will wear them.

I would say that you need to wait until Sept. to be sure of the temp. When we went Sept. 2007, it was really too cold for us to swim. We needed pants. When we went last Oct., it was so HOT (not as bad as PHX, but bad to us in comparison). It seems to vary a lot. Get your shorts, but be prepared to pack pants at the last minute!

September weather can vary quite a bit from year to year here in So Cal. Be ready for very warm weather and cool (but not cold) weather.

My wedding anniversary is in Sept. so I tend to remember the temps over the years. On average it's still pretty warm in Sept.

Nights and mornings are always very comfortable though and sometimes cool. I remember several pretty hot heat waves in September, rivaling normal Summer temps (90s+). Some years it's cooler.

This year we had a very cool June, not sure if that matters in the scheme of things?

Definitely check the forecast as your date approaches. We'll be there in mid Sept. as well ... hoping for cool weather!

I was going to post a similar thread later next month before my trip. That type of weather will be perfect for us as we are use to mid 90's and up and humidity

So then longer shorts/capris would be good then? I'll be inside at the Expo during the day one day and at the parks another day.

I'm planning to go clothes shopping some time next month.

On my only September visit back in 2006, I ended up having to buy a sweatshirt because it was a lot cooler at night than I expected.
