She is going to college in the Fall and will live in a dorm. We don't want to purchase bedding or curtains, as these things will need to be coordinated with her roommate.

I just gave her new luggage for her 18th b'day (which is what I received for graduation).

Any ideas?

We gave our daughter a nice set of luggage, some money and a trip to WDW when she graduated H.S. Since you've already given the luggage (which is a good gift idea), how about making a gift card basket? You could include some gift cards to local restaurants, the movie theaters, gas stations or the college bookstore. I know my daughter appreciated the gas cards a lot, and they work just like a cc or debit at the pump. That way she didn't have part with any "cash" of her own to fill up the tank, eat out, go to a movie, etc. At least for awhile anyway. ;)

My parents gave me a beautiful sapphire and diamond ring. I still have it and will pass it on to my DDs one day.

My dad gave me a laptop and his gently used printer
Mom and stepdad gave me a tv and dvd player. They felt that even if it didn't end up in the dorm, I was old enough to be able to watch movies in my room.

Thanks for all the ideas! I believe her Dad is giving her a laptop. I'm also already taking her on a Baltic cruise in July... which was a Christmas/Early Graduation gift. I like the gift card and the jewelry idea.

Any others?

I was given an i-pod and a trip to disney. I was also allowed to bring my best friend along which made it even more fun :)

I have no suggests, but popped in to see what others recommended. I love the gift card idea. This is the type of gift that will surely be used and appreciated in the months to come and it's really a pretty original idea even if it's pretty basic. It would also fit any budget you might have.

The items I used most in the dorms at college (not that long ago) were the following:
Fridge and food steamer to make in room food, very helpful if you have class or a team practice while the cafe is open.
Loft kit for the bed and a plush chair that pulls out into a bed that fit under it.
TV, DVD, Stereo and laptop.

If you are looking for a big gift I would go with the jewelry. My grandparents gave me a really nice ring. I dont really wear it as it is not my style although I might if the stones were reset.

Finally if you go the gift card route, be sure to include a couple rolls of quarters for the laundry. It is always hard to try and find them when you need them.

COngrats and good luck to your DD

If you go the gift card route, I'd really suggest a big one to Staples or whatever office supply store is in your area. There are not enough thanks that I can give to the people who thought to give me the card to Staples. It put a big dent in what I had to buy there (a LOT of stuff)
As for quarters for the laundry, not all schools have that system. I know mine uses money that you put on your ID card (essentially a debit type system). Check with the school before you stock up on quarters

Why would she have to coordinate her bedding with her roommate? I can see needing to get the roommate's opinion on curtains, but bedding?

If you go the gift card route, make sure that there are no underlying charges after only a couple months. Many places that offer gift cards start charging against the remaining balance after only a couple months. So if they are not used pretty quickly, the money on them will quickly go down.
After I found out about this practice, I stopped buying them for people all together.
I also don't know about a loft kit unless you know that she may need it. Some school dorms furniture will already convert to lofts. Mine did back in the early 90's. :)
A fridge is a nice gift (but make sure it's not too big for the dorm's standards). Also personal towels, tv, dvd player (if she doesn't already have them), small kitchen utensils and/or pots. Maybe a one cup or small coffee maker (if she drinks it).

I also don't see the need for coordinating bedding. Unless she's rooming with a friend she already knows, she probably won't have the same roommate for the following years. So you might as well get something that she likes now. I also don't see the need for curtains. The college I went to already had them. :confused3
That's all I can think of for the moment. :)

Gosh, I thought it was an ironclad rule that bedding had to match with your roomate!! It certainly was when I went away to college a hundred years ago!!!!!

DD is getting a flat screen TV and a thing for her car that gives directions. I think that will be particularly useful in a new town - she will be taking her car with her to school, and she isn't the best at finding her way around unfamiliar places (gets that from me!!)
I'll probably do a gift basket of gift cards as well.

My mom gave me two huge scrap books of my school years from pre-school to 12th grade. They contained all of my school photos, report cards, drawings, essays etc. Pictures of my friends through the years, school trips and family trips. Just so many things to help me remember those years. One of the best gifts I ever got and will always treasure.

Does she already have a digital camera and memory card reader? My DD loved emailing pictures home and to her friends at different schools.

Good question, and I had thought about asking the same thing.

It does get complicated when different colleges have different requirements/restrictions when it comes to what is allowed in a dorm room.

My DD and a good friend are going to room together (and I'll be praying it goes well and they remain friends!!!) and they've already bought their bedding, and it is coordinated, and will look awesome. Others who get their roommate assignments in the summer might want to wait until then, and decide if they want to coordinate. I agree tho that more importantly it's what each student likes, and somewhere down the road, DD might very well end up with a different roommate, and she is NOT getting new bedding!

DD will be in a suite type of dorm, with two dorm rooms sharing a bathroom, so they'll have to supply bathroom items; we're waiting on purchasing that. Even if their suitemates bring their own tho, I suggested to my DD that it might be nice to change off and actually WASH the rugs/shower curtain/etc every so often. ;)

The university DD will be attending requires that if you want both a fridge and microwave that you have a fridge/microwave combo that can be rented from them (or, I suppose, you can bring your own combo); when the microwave is being used, the fridge turns off, so that there isn't an overload of electricity being used by so many people on the campus at once. So, I'd check on fridge/microwave requirements before purchasing.

The dorm rooms at DD's university don't have curtains, but they do have flammability restrictions that we need to consider when we buy them. (Who knew? :confused3) A lot of the decor items she'll just want to pick out herself...if there's anything left...we've bought A LOT!

The university also supplies (or rents?) the items to raise the bed to loft height or lower. DD isn't even sure what she wants to do about that, and is probably going to wait until she's moved in and settled to decide. She has a futon she can take for underneath if she goes the loft route. If she does do that, she'll lose A LOT of storage space that she could have under the bed. That's why we're playing that by ear. (If I knew what she'd be doing, I'd get her a new cover for the futon that would match her bedding.)

The university also has a laptop purchasing program, the exact details due out next month, after high school graduation, so we're not sure what route we're going to take to purchase one, or when. We''ll need to get her a printer too.

I like the idea of giftcards, particularly for gas! She'll have her car with her, and buying gas has put a huge dent in her P/T job earnings. Love the office supply store gift card idea too.

When I read about the rolls of quarters, I thought that would be a great gift basket item, but then monarchsfan mentioned the card system, and I think that's what my DD's college uses. (I'm going to bring a list of things to ask about/check out/measure while we're there for orientation in June!)

For Christmas, we had gotten her a small TV and a DVD recorder with some blank DVDs to take to college. Also got her a tool kit from IKEA (maybe $6?) with college in mind.

Love the small coffeemaker idea too, since she's taken up drinking coffee lately.

I'm thinking what I'll end up doing is a gift basket of sorts, using a storage box that she can take with her. I did buy her 4 packs of dinner napkins at The Christmas Tree Shops that coordinate with her bedding :teeth: because, well, they coordinate with her bedding :), and I figure she'll be eating in her room sometimes. Also want to add a label maker, and some "office" supplies...stapler, tape, etc. I picked up a couple of books too...one is Chicken Soup for the College Soul, and I forgot the name of the other one...bought it a while ago, and it's in my bedroom, with my sleeping husband. I've got a lot of thinking to do about what else to add to it; since they'll be cleaning their own bathroom (or not  ), I'll probably throw some cleaning supplies in there too...things that will make it relatively easy, like cleaning wipes, or items from The Clean Team. And a SmartSpin (she got some very inexpensive kitchen items...plastic bowls, plates, cups...at Walmart.)

Oh...one thing I will get her for college is a Table Mate II, "as seen on TV":

I actually had gotten one for DD, but my elderly mom really needed one, so I gave it to her and she loves it. (Keep your eyes open for 20% off coupons for Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens & Things...they each take the other's coupons, even expired ones up to 60 days old!)

Bed Bath & Beyond has college checklists...somewhat over the top, but some good ideas too...

as does Linens & Things...

How about a paraffin hand treatment kit? or a trip to the spa for a facial? A really good college dictionary?
