I have never used a grocery stop before, but think I will this trip. We are staying at WL in 2 rooms (one for us, one for the 3 kids). I can get two fridges...I plan to get some milk and cereal for those extra early mornings...also some pop tarts since my kids eat them un-toasted....
(If I am not mistaken, WL sells milk as well?)

But I am wondering...
What kinds of snacks should I get at my grocery stop?
What will carry well in a backpack?

Any suggesstions?

I was thinking goldfish, cheese-its, smaller bags of cookies etc. Should I get juice boxes or something like that? Granola bars?

I think the grocery stop is at Publix? Anyone been there before?

Thanks in advance!!

For us Bottled Water is a big one. I can not drink the water at WDW so I have to stick to bottled for everything, including making my tea in the AM and Hot Chocolate in the PM.

Besides the water we got Muffins, Pop Tarts, Granola Bars, Instant Oatmeal. Basically stuff for breakfasts.

I second the bottle water. I do not know what it is about the WL water but we can not even use it to brush our teeth. Our first trip there we spent a lot of money buying it by the gallon in the gift shop. Much cheaper at a grocery store. We have bought milk in the WL gift shop. Snacks that will not crush are best for back packs. Low sugar are better to avoid those sugar lows. If you pack things like gold fish, take or pick up at your grocery stop some of the toss or resue plastice container and put the snacks in those. Trail mix or nuts are good. Peanut butter crackers, or the little packs of cheese and crackers. Fruit snacks are not very good for you, but are neat and easy and a fun treat!
We learned that hard way not to over buy. You really eat less stuff in the room than you plan too.

We love the WL. Have a blast!!!

This is so true. We always plan to save money by eating in the room and bringing in food. But besides breakfast we usually don't.

I purchased way to much snack foods for our last trip. Most of it was tossed in the trash before we left for the airport. This time around I won't go overboard with the snacks.

I do plan to get some fresh fruit this time. Strawberries, seedless grapes, and some cherries.

We are also going to pick up some bread, lunch meat, pb & J, pop, juice boxes, water, chips ect. The one thing we are going to do is have a picnic lunch at BB so picking things up to make sandwiches. I will bring plastic silverware from home. I am packing a collapsible cooler to carry to BB.

We always go to Publix- Decent prices and good selection.

We usually get water, milk, cereal bars, and the little boxes of cereal. chips, and granola type snacks. makings for PB &J, and fresh fruit. My DH is low-carb, so some slim-jims, cheese and peanuts for him.

We also get pop, and beer. Remember that Disney is Coke products. If you have any Pepsi, or Mountain Dew people, you will need to stock up. I'm a diet-coke freak, and still get some for the room. I need it when I first wake-up, not when I'm presentable to go to the food court, to fill my mug.

Milk, cereal, mini lenders bagels (our kids love them), cream cheese, fresh fruit!!!! It is such a pick me up to have a banana, orange or apple in the middle of the day or bedtime. I'd love to have grapes but they've never been very good looking when I went to purchase them.

As for snacks for the park...granola bars, fruit snacks!!!! (these are good as they help quelch a little thirst too...or at least don't make you thirsty as other snacks might) star bursts. (ok, it's candy, but it takes time to unwrap and eat and gets the saliva going and just seems to be a good candy break for my kids) juice boxes!!! (I freeze these and bring them into the park) Can't tell you how many times they've been a life saver waiting in a hot line!

We bought cold cuts but like others have said, that didn't turn out to be used much. I do like having sliced american cheese on hand though. That always seems to be eaten.

I would go with the absolute favorites of what your kids like. I got a variety and all that my son wanted was his favorite fruit snacks & pez candy! I would definitely get juice boxes. My DD really like's juice boxes and I packed a couple each day. She is a picky drinker. Publix has smaller quarts of milk. I picked up chocolate & white and they fit in the fridge nicely. We also stayed at WL. I wouldn't buy to much pop if you won't be carrying it into the parks. I would just get maybe 1 2ltr of something everyone would like. My kids don't drink pop, so 1 2ltr was plenty for us. I got decafinated pop since, I didn't want to be awake all night. We also bought one 4 pack of wine coolers (put them in the freezer section & it will be slushy!). It was nice to have one at night. I wouldn't buy too much water, if you won't carry it to the parks. WL water is yucky, so you will want this. Publix also had the individual cereal boxes. I just got a couple of those and bought a dozen doughnuts from Krispy Kreme. The Krispy Kreme is on the right before you get to publix (right beside CVS). I could have bought more of these my son loves them! It's vacation why not eat some yummy stuff! We bought doritos and they were never eaten! Publix did not have the disney fruit snacks...I brought mine from home. I brought gummy worms for on the flight down, it helped with the pressure in my kids ears. I brought baggies to make up snack bags for the parks. You might be able to get some Valentine's day candy on clearance. I would just keep in mind that whatever you buy to bring to the parks...you will have to carry all day with you. It may or may not be worth hauling it. We found that we drank & ate less than we thought we would. I bought disposable sippy cups and divided up the large milk's at the parks for my kids. It worked well. The milk comes in very large screw top containers at a lot of places. I would buy cheap paper plates & just pitch whatever is left of them when you leave. Publix was very nice and had a lot of things in smaller quantities. The prices were good too. I really wanted to go to the super target that is right down the street...but they had just closed when I got there. I hope that helps ::MickeyMo

Why can't you brush your teeth with the water? What's so bad about it, do you get mouth sores or upset stomachs?

We always make a grocery stop. I buy Water (lots of it), juice boxes, they have those 1/2 cans of soda six packs, fruit snacks, and bags of pretzels, goldfish, cookies, some fresh fruit and yogurt. I also buy a small box of sandwhich bags to pack snacks to take with us. Last time, I bought those Smucker's uncrustables (PB&J) sandwhiches which were perfect to hold my kids over if they were "starving" in between a meal. We pack a backpack for the day and take what we think we will need. Also, going to the pool, it's nice to take what we will need. So, I would say we definitely save $$$.

I usually buy extra sunscreen too. And my DD wears pull ups so I buy those and wipes. Anything you can avoid packing, unpacking, and repacking is a good idea.

Someone said not to overbuy the snacks and I would agree. I always hate throwing away food and will wind up carrying what I can back on the plane with us.

Publix is just like any other grocery supermarket.

Have fun!!!

We go back this April!!

We had a huge list last trip - stayed DVC so we had a kitchen - and threw most of it.

Revised list - This is "park groceries":

Water, we went through four bottles a day. We freeze it so its cold. WDW tap water is OK, but we enjoying carrying bottles with us. Apparently, the Brita filter bottles work well if you don't want to buy bottled, but still want to carry it around.

Fruit snacks and granola bars - for those moments where the kids go into blood sugar crash two minutes before you get on the ride you've spent twenty minutes standing in line for.

That's it for the parks. I don't like carrying juice boxes for a few reasons...if they explode in my backpack (which they've done) huge mess! The other reason is that my kids get plenty of sugar at WDW, I don't need to supply that much more. We usually get them a fruit juice with their lunch and that comes in those bottles - so we always have some for the afternoon left over from lunch.

Kitchen groceries - eggs, coffee, coffee filters, half and half, sugar, salt and pepper, bread, peanut butter, jam, milk, orange juice, Nesquik. We didn't use pop - or for the amount we used we could buy a bottle from the gift shop cheaper than throwing out all those cans! We didn't use lunchmeat. A lot of stuff I bring from home - salt and pepper, sugar, coffee and coffee filters.

We usually get cereal and milk for breakfasts. One thing we forgot last time though---plastic bowls to put the cereal in... :sad2: Duh!

Definitely bottled water and fresh fruit!

We went on a very tight budget in December. Here's what we got:

At the grocery store:
48 bottles of water- not quite enough for 3 adults for 8 days.
juice boxes
pop
pound of cheese
alcohol
bananas, apples, grapes, etc.
chips
bread
english muffins
rice cakes
chocolate
basically anything to make it cheaper and to eat!

Instant oatmeal and easy mac/cheese. And yes I did bring my own cheap bowls from the dollar store and used the microwave in the food court.

Also used the microwave for soup to go and the taoster for english muffins and pop tarts.

I didn't mind the little embarrassment for bringing my own food compared to spending $25 + for each meal for us.

I brought ffrom home fruitsnacks, dried fruit, handi snacks, peanut butter.

When we go in June my sister will be making a stop at Costco. There are a total of 8 of us going, 5 of which are children, including a 9 and 11 year old boy who can eat you out of house and home. To save money we will be getting food for breakfast, lunches and snacks. We are planning our meals very carefully so that we do not buy too much. A lot of days we are coming back to the resort mid-day so that the kids can play in the pool and the youngest, who will be 18 months can nap, and going back to the parks in the afternoon.

A good suggestion that I have seen in several places is to leave any un-opened packaged foods for mousekeeping.

OKAY... what's with the grocery stop? I assume this is not an option for anyone on the magical express right? Bummer. I think we'll have to bring our own food "bag" on the airport or use wegoshop.com Let me know if I'm wrong and we "can" take advantage of some kind of grocery stop though!

I'm not sure about the stop but if not it might be a good idea to bring a food bag. We will bring a few things with us as well. Mainly stuff that we can get here a lot cheaper, we have a grocery store that does double coupons up to $1. I got two jars of peanut butter for 33 cents each and some fruit snacks and applesauce for less than 50 cents as well. My sister will pack that and some more stuff we plan to get in a carry on bag. The main stuff we are getting at Costco will be perishables and some snack stuff like chips.

Does anyone know if the fridge at POR would be big enough to hold a gallon of milk?
