My DD was invited to a birthday party for her seat mate on the bus. She will be turning 7 and has just moved out of the school district so this is the last time DD will see her. I thought of a gift certificate for Toys T Us since I really don't know her but will that be tacky?

my kids (10 & 8) love to get gift cards. I think it would be fine.

I've found it easier to let my kids pick gifts for their friends. They seem to know what the popular toys are and what their friend would like.

I hate to always bring up money...How much do you like to spend on birthday party gifts? That may help us really target some good ideas.

My DD also likes gift cards. Or, if your price range is in the 15-20 range - what about a Disney DVD of some sort? Up in my neck of the woods, if it is a summer birthday - a nice beach towel is always a fun present - I noticed you are in FL.

Why don't you have your DD pick out a gift? Since it's for another girl she should have a good idea of what she'd like. A gift card would be fine though. One of those Click-It kits from Lego would probably be something fun as well.

we have started giving t shirts. I have usually seen the kids to get an idea on size. My dd gave some friends who are 7 Lizzy Mcquire T shirts and they were a huge hit.

A $20 gift card would be more than enough. Kids with birthdays in January usually got what they really wanted in December, but have things they didn't get on their list that your gift card could fill!

My son's birthday is about a week after Christmas and I ask everyone to get him gift cards so he could pick out the things he wanted himself. It's real fun for them!

If you don't like to give gift cards, here are some ideas for a 7 year old girl (I have one myself). Art & craft kits, stuff for kids from Bath and Body Works, the newest "Kids Bop" CD, "Polly Pocket," "My Little Pony" (a little young, but my daughter and her friend love them), "Betty Spaghetty," games like "Twister Moves" or "Sorry," anything Barbie (including Barbie videos), "Hello Kitty" stuff, "Ello" building kits or make-up and nail polish (for play, of course). I hope this helps!

the Ello sets have been a big hit with DD and her friends.

I give gift cert. for the movies, I think they have $7 or $10 ones here, then I get a small empty popcorn box or bag from concession and go to the store and put some whoppers, nerds, whatever in it along with the gift cert.

I've gone to tons of parties where I don't know the child. I always buy a gift, but get a gift receipt.

I try to get something that most kids like.

Also, try asking your child. Brittany knows exactly what her friend like (now turning 5).
