Looking for recommendation for a good budget puppy food. Do not want something that will make him have gas. He is a Shih Poo.
Thanks

We love the kirkland brand foods. They are a great price and have wonderful ingredients. They rate 4 out of 5 starts on one of those dog food review sites.

How does Sam's Club *Member's Mark* brand fare ~ that's what we're feeding our dog, is it comprable to Kirkland dog food?

I have fed my Dog Solid Gold brand food as well as my Mom's dog. We both have female black labs. They have great puppy foods as well as adult dog food, but I am afraid it might be considered not budget friendly. Up in the North here it costs around $80 a bag, with my dog Maggie, that lasts about a month or maybe longer.
I was told by the vet that the Wolf King http://www.solidgoldnorthwest.com/products/pro_dry/pro_wking.html
is a good food because it contains Bison and Rice. Some dogs are becoming allergic to beef or other foods. So even if you don't get a fancy dog food like Solid Gold brand, you can try to look for one with similar ingredients. Or you may find the ingredients to be totally different.

Watch out for the corn fillers in so many of them. We feed our two labs Wellness and while not budget, it has cut down on the ear infections one of them constantly had (and that was expensive!). Luckily a small dog doesn't eat so much so you can still get a good quality food and not pay a lot for food.

We feed our mini doxie Blue Buffalo. It not on the cheaper side I believe the $30 bag is 15 lbs or so. It lasts about 6 weeks or so feeding our 8 lb dog. With the higher quality foods you need to feed less. Our dog eats 1 1/2 cups total spred over 2 feeding during the day. We went form Puppy Chow to Blue, and she eats half the amount of Blue that she did Puppy Chow.

Avoid any thing with corn or cornmeal. Any meat ingredient should say "chicken" and not "chicken meal". The first 5 ingredients are the most important so none of these should be fillers. Rice and barley or oats are way better grains than corn.

We feed both of our dogs BLUE too. We have a large breed lab/retriever mix and a mini doxie too. :thumbsup2 I am firm believer in good quality dog food for our dogs. In the long run............. less trips to the VET for skin issues, stomach issues, allergies and LESS YARD CLEAN UP. :thumbsup2

Can't have "cheap" and "no gas" in the same sentence. :)

It's going to be hard to find a truly inexpensive dog food that's got high-quality ingredients.

We have a 2-year old Shih Tzu. They are very prone to sensitive skin. Our little guy would itch, itch, and itch some more. Last month I switched him to Blue Buffalo. He LOVES it. Not a cheap food, but I'm prepared to fork over the money if it means he won't itch as much and is healthier. For us, the smaller bag is about $20 and lasts 3-4 weeks. They have the larger back for $30 ish (I think it's maybe 15 lbs) which is a MUCH better deal.

If you can't afford to feed your dog well, you can't afford to have a dog. Don't feed it that junk. I suggest Nature's Variety Raw Frozen food. You're going to have a happier, healthier dog if you feed it well.

We feed all our dogs and cat Taste of the wild is rated 6 over 6 and it is the best price that you will find for the quality. We pay $44 for a 30 pound bag.

I want to give another vote for Taste of the Wild...I have 4 pugs, all of them are gassy dogs...I have tried MANY diff types of food, and this is by far the best. I get mine from Tractor Supply, and a #15 bag is usually $22, which I can get 2 1/2 weeks out of with my crew.

We just got a new dog 2 weeks ago from the animal shelter. She is a chihuahua/terrier mix. We are feeding her Wellness Small Breed. She only eats 1 cup per day and it is sooo worth the $28 the bag cost. I think it was 11 pounds. Her skin was dry and awful when we got her and already it is 100% better. She only poops once per day and after the first few days of adjusting to new food no gas.

We feed both our cats and dog Wellness brand. We are very happy with it .

Actually, a food with "chicken meal" as one of the first ingredients is better than one with "chicken" as one of the first ingredients. "chicken" includes water and when the food is dehydrated, the actual amount of protein will be far less than a food where the protein souce is already dehydrated (as in the case of chicken meal)

I can't recommend this yet as I've just purchased it. It's called Royal Canine and they have formulations for different types of dogs. We just gave a new home to a Yorkie, so we picked up the Yorkie blend. It was a bit pricey at 16.99 for 2.5 pounds. I bought the smaller size to try it out. Has anyone else tried this?

Our other dog is eating Blue Buffalo and seems to do okay with it. That's usually 42-45 for a 25? pound bag which doesn't last long.

Costco has recently started carrying Natures Domain and our miniature schnauzer really likes the Salmon/Sweet Potato. Runs about $35 for a 35lb bag.
