What to do with Southwest Credits???

Please be careful selling them on CL. Do not sell them until AFTER you fly. You're giving your name and confirmation number to a total stranger so they will have the ability to cancel your tickets and book their own flight using your entire purchase amount. If you've already flown then the risk is gone but if you haven't then that's a huge risk.

My understanding is that you can resurect expired flight credits for $35 per flight even after the expire, and are good for another 12 months. I have done this more than once. Your chances look good:dance3:

It used to be $35 to extend credits, it's $50 now.

If you have more than one credit expiring I'd definitely combine them by booking a cheap flight to get them on one confirmation number first though. Worth doing if your credit is large enough, and of course with the new rules taking effect soon, you'll need to put them in the name of a person who will definitely be flying in the next year.

If anyone is booking before January 28th for a flight on or before February 10th (a long shot I know) shoot me off a pm. I have some credits that expire 2/10/11 that you can have. Don't get too excited though, we're talking less than $15 total. ;)

Edited to add: Wow, Dis-ers are fast! Credits have already been given away.

Thanks to everyone's advice, I was able to combine all our credits into one and sell it on Craigslist. After I sold it, I went to delete my post and it said my listing had been removed by the Craigslist community. Does anyone know why that would happen?

It might be one of those things you're not allowed to sell on craig's list. Since there's no actual item. It's just a code. I'm sure a lot of people could be shadey about it. But like I said, there's a level of trust between the seller and the buyer.

I would love to buy a credit for SWA if anyone has any... I just won a family 4-pack to the Denver aqaurium and would like to go (even though we are a party of two )

Let me know!

Maybe its the early hour, but I'm having trouble understanding how to take credits under multiple names and book/cancel/rebook, etc. to get them all under one name. Our December flight went down and now we have $100 worth of credit under 5 different names! The kids probably won't be flying again this year, but DH and I will be and I'd love to not lose these credits.

Oh, o.k. I hope I didn't break any rules.

It takes some effort, especially if you have little credit spread over a bunch of people like I did. You can only use two credits per purchase. But if you had cancelled a roundtrip and everyone has the same last name, when you pull up the confirmation it will list all of them. The you can only use 4 and the 4 credits have to cover all of the purchase or you'll have to delete one and use a CC to make up the balance. I'm assuming you have $10 credit for each way per person for a total of $100. That one is going to be tricky. I had a few $14 credits that allowed me to buy a one way ticket to put it over by a dollar. You're going to have to play around with numbers and flights. The best flights I found to work with are the LAX-LAS routes, because they have $21 dollar flights which will work with the amount of credit you have.

Does any of that make sense? If you need some help, just PM me, and I'll try to explain it better. Anyway you're going to have to book and cancel to get the credit in one or two names. Good luck :goodvibes

to last pp.... you booked a flight, using your credits, for approx. the same amount as the credits, then canceled, now you have all credits in your name to use by the date?

Yes! There were little credits in my mom's name, my DH's, and 3 of my daughters. I just picked a random location that worked for my price range (I only did one-way flights) and put the new flights in my name. Then I had to cancel and do it again, over and over, until I had one big credit all in my name :thumbsup2 I hope I don't get put on some watch list or something though for messing around with flights.

did you have to cancel and rebook multiple times b/c of the # of credits used? i.e.- using only 2 per reservation made? just double checking...

Yes. Because all of my family was on one reservation number, I could use 4 credits at a time. But when I had separate confirmation numbers, then only 2.

I'd love to know what could possibly be done with southwest credits. I recently had to cancel our flights and now have all of these credits with nothing to use them for. Glad I didn't lose them completely but we aren't traveling soon. Did we determine if they can be sold on craigslist or not? Gosh, I'd hate to lose them!

List them on Craig's List. You will have them sold and money in hand within an hour. There are people who need last minute flights all the time and don't want to pay the price of a ticket at the last minute, so they search on Craig's List for a deal. Just don't put your phone number in the ad. It will ring off the hook!!! You will have to book the ticket(s) for the person via a laptop during your meeting to exchange tickets for $$. Once the tickets are booked by you in their name, they can change the flight date/time on their own if need be. But you'll need to book the initial flight.

Does anyone know if you can book a vacation with these credits? Or is it just airfare? Hmmm... Off to plan a vacay! :surfweb:

Interesting. I just searched craigslist in my area and not one offer popped up. I thought there would be more. Weird...

I listed them on craigslist in my area. Boy is this all confusing. I have 730ish funds that expire before the end of August. I listed them at a discounted price. Really glad I booked with Southwest or I would've lost them completely. Thanks for all of the help. I hope someone can use them.

Please call Southwest's Rapid Rewards Dept. They have just re-designed the program, and the expiration on tickets is not what it used to be.

Good Luck!

Wow, that's a lot!

Since you already put up a Craigslist ad, this might be too late, or you might not be interested anyway, but you can also pay a fee to extend your credits.

As mdh715 stated, SW is making some changes to the program, but I don't think they changed the rules about extending credits. Definitely verify with them, but I'm pretty sure that as long as the credits are all on one confirmation number, $50 will extend them for a full year.

I always seem to end up with just a few dollars here and there, so extending credits has never been worth it to me, but with $700+ I'd definitely pay the fee.
