It has been 20 years since I was in LA. Debating taking DH and DD for first time, and going to Disneyland and 1-2 other parks. What are some other things to see for a cheap trip? What's a good beach?

For the closeness factor I like Newport/Huntington Beach, but for browsing I like Laguna Beach.

Another great activity in LA is visiting the Getty Center. The Malibu location is beign renovated so it is on the 405 at the very north edge of LA. I think they charge $6 or 7 for parking but there is no admission fee and it is a wordl class museum.

I'm sure other people will have more ideas.

We had a good time just driving around the Hollywood/Burbank area. We even went to take a peek at the Disney Studios. We were standing at the guard gate trying to take a picture of the Seven Dwarfs Building, and there was somebody standing near the guard and he offered to take us in to get a closer shot of the building, and took a picture of us in front of the reflecting pool!

We also saw the WB water tower, drove past Mann's Chinese Theater and Capitol Records, went to Rodeo Drive and "window shopped," and went to Beverly Center to have lunch, shop, and visit Hard Rock Cafe for souvenirs. We also attempted to get near the Hollywood sign. Didn't go up the right road, but we got a good view from where we were. There's also an observatory and lots of other neat things in the area that don't require any admission.

<font color=blue>Be a Tourist. In Hollywood, walk down Hollywood Blvd and find your favorite celebrity's star on the Walk of Fame. Visit Grahman's Theater and put your feet or hands in the cement over those of the legends of Hollywood. See the latest Disney release at the El Capitan theater. Purchase a "Map of the Stars Homes" and drive around in hopes of catching a star taking out the garbage. Walk down Rodeo Drive. Camp out in front of the chapel on Rodeo Drive and witness a Hollywood wedding. Have a power lunch at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. See the taping of a show. Visit Muscle Beach in Venice.

Tink gave you some great ideas.
I would add:

Visit Griffith Park and go to the L.A. Zoo and the Gene Autrey Western Heritage Museum.
They are next to each other.

Go to Olvera (sp?) Street for a great look at early Los Angeles and terrific Mexican food.

La Brea Tar Pits, can walk into gift shop, also if you do Manns, look for the Magic Castle, its like the mecca of magic, private club/mansion up on hill behind Manns, also the cemetary where Marilyn Monroe, has lots of
other famous people, like Buddy Rich, Natalie Woods, its surrounded by High rise buildings, so you have to really look for it, lots of things around like disney studios, great to walk around. We met the kid from Home Improvement in Taco Bell next to Universal one time, he was great, sat down and talked to my kids, took pictures, etc. It was the highlight, check it out you might get lucky..
