What to do about Snoring!?

I'm sure this is an issue for at least some of you. My husband snores, and I mean SNORES! Last night he actually slept on the couch b/c I poked him one to many times trying to get him to stop. I have slept in one of my DD's room to get away in the past. What do we do????

At his last Dr.'s appointment he was given some nasel spray that didn't work at all (his Dr. said it probably wouldn't). The Dr. actually said that I should just take sleeping pills! (never mind that I wouldn't wake up for 3 days if I did). I have tried to encourage him to take a walk when he gets home from work (he gets home after midnight) since he doesn't come straight to bed anyway. Perhaps that would help shed a few extra pounds and releive the snoring a bit. But he doesn't seem interested.

What have some of you done? I'm losing sleep, my husband is losing sleep, we have got to do something.

Thanks for listening.

Breathe Right strips are okay they work to some extent. My husband is a really horrible snorer (is that a word?). It is brutal. I used to go and sleep in my son's room on the floor when he was little but cannot do that. It makes me very irritable too. He gets angry if I ask him to turn over etc so I accidently kick him but there are times when I want to jump out the window.

Evidently you haven't seen the sleeping in separate rooms thread. :teeth: This seemed to be the #1 reason why.

Have you tried the wax ear plugs? MY DH snores very loudly every night. Those little cheap ear plugs works wonders for me.

Ditto. I couldn't live without my earplugs.

I have thought about ear plugs, but am afraid I wouldn't hear my alarm clock in the morning. I am trying to get him to go to a specialist, but he doesn't want to go.

Thanks for all the responses. You guys are fast!

My husband used to snore every night for years. It wasn't a glass shaking snore, but it was enough to keep me awake if he fell asleep first. He would even wake me up sometimes. Of course, it would burn me up to be awake while he happily snored away sleeping. Last year he lost 20 lbs on a low-carb diet and he stopped snoring! :cool1:

Welcome to my life!!! My dh is a world class snorer. He went to a sleep clinic where he was told...no sleep apnea but he does have a snoring issue. Well, I could have told 'em that!! He has an appt with a nose/throat specialist at MGH this month but evidently the surgery he would need is about $4000 and it might not even work. And we would have to pay for it since he doesn't have sleep apnea issues. He has tried the strips, sprays etc. And to make matters worse...ever since I went through 'the change' I don't sleep well at all. With his snoring away beside me....well, I don't sleep at all. So, now I take 1/2 an Ambien every other night. That way we get to spend every other night together...the other nights, he sleeps in the guest room. It's a reall pain.

Ditto here too. Earplugs are a must for me due to DH's snoring. I use the "Hearos" brand because they block out the most noise. Oddly, I am still able to easily hear my kiddos through the baby monitor, but not the snoring. I guess it's that mom's super-sensitive hearing for their kids.

If you are worried about not hearing your alarm clock, turn it really loud. You will still be able to hear it through the earplugs.

Looks like ear plugs and losing weight.

Someone once told me that tying a brick to your back would stop you snoring, but somehow I doubt it's a good remedy :)

Has the doctor suggested a sleep study? If not, ask about it. Snoring may or may not be affecting his health. If he is having apneic episodes(puases in breathing) it can lead to serious heart problems. My BIL and sister both had to go on CPAP machines at night due to their various snoring issues. They look like a sight with their gear on, but they both swear it's the only thing that helps.

I brought my hubby to the store 2 weeks before Christmas. I had him sit in all the recliners and asked him which was more comfortable. He pointed, I pulled out my credit card and moved him into the spare bedroom...have slept much better ever since, and so has he. The dogs don't keep saying.."roll over" :smooth:

Of couse he is always welcomed to visit, he just cannot stay the night.
