What to do about car seats?

I'm just trying to work out what would be the best thing to do regarding car seats?

My ds 5 is quite tall (123cms), and he is in a high backed booster, but I don't mind him having just a booster cushion for our hloiday and they are light so can go in our luggage. My dd 3 last week is still in an isofix 5 point harness, which are pretty heavy. She is tall also (104cms) and can go in a high backed booster, but when she falls asleep she needs more support.

What does everyone else do? If I take my own carseat does it count in our weight allowance or is it extra like taking a pushchair? Hiring is quite expensive and it seems like such a waste to buy a new one there for such a short trip

Hi we normally take the seat with us and check it in to the hold luggage. Depending on the airline to the US you often can check 2 pieces per person, including children, so with a family you can take quite a few things (as long as each one is withing the weight limit).
If you take just the booster seat without the back that's easy to check, otherwise depending on what sort of seat you have if you can put the back and cushion part together securely then check that as 1 piece. We have used that cellophane wrapping machine at the airport to make it secure.
Certainly beats renting one when you get there.

We've tried both methods and prefer taking our own.

We usually fly with Virgin and the pushchair and car seat do not count towards your luggage allowance and are carried free of charge.

We have a car seat bag which we use, but Virgin usually supply clear bags, tag it and you then take it over to oversize baggage to drop off.
