What to do 🤔

I am late..but try to get the same use year. We have been members since 1995, have 3 contracts--2 at OKW and one at Beach Club. It has been hard book sometimes --we usually bank points and go to beach club every other year. Seriously considering selling our points and leaving DVC. It seems non-DVC members end up with better deals and less expensive trips (when considering maintenance fees)
You think cash rates at Beach Club are better than using your points?!?

Whatcha Talking About Willis?!? (Different Strokes reference)

5) If you are planning your stay for the year and decided not to use all your points you can until the last day of the 8th month (Use Year month is Month "1" - charts exist to show dates) save your points for the next and only in to the next year - banking
6) If however you are opposite and decided now that you wanted another trip or longer stay but were short on points you could pull points from your next and only next Use Year in to your current year to use - borrowing

What do you mean by 8 th month?? This use year thing has me a little bit confused. I deal with Rci points so I’m familiar how the points system works- so if my UY is December, I own 300 points and only used 250, the remaining 50 have to be used by the following year and in this case, would the eighth month be considered August?

December is month 1, January month 2, February 3, March 4, April 5, May 6, June 7, July 8

So by the end of July (July 31st) you need to bank any points you are not going to use by the end of your 12 month "year" which ends on November 30th.

Less expensive how? In what world?

If you are renting DVC points as an example you are going to pay right now $18-$22/point. When your MFs are $9.1207 for 2025. This means you are saving $9-$13 per point you use on your booking.

Looks like you can buy BCV right now for around $130 so that means it roughly 10 years to break even. Except you wouldn't have control of your bookings that whole time.

Additionally if at the end of the 10 years you go to sell your BCV contract it would still have value so really the breakeven when you can come out ahead is shorter. If you keep going and don't sell then after 10 years you are going to be getting a 50% discount over renters.

Regarding cash they don't remotely come close to DVC point costs (rental or owned).

I agree. For example:

When we've gone to WDW in the past, my family always has stayed at Value resorts and we like Pop Century. I'm expecting we'll go to WDW in May 2026 for our YDD's high school graduation celebration trip. :-) Using a week in May 2025 as a comparison, a week at Pop Century in a preferred room without a discount would be $1839 for a week (Sun-Sat).

We purchased a 100-pt Aulani resale contract last month. Purchased at $96/point. So here's my math:
  • Total purchase price (not incl. closing costs) = $9600.
  • $ dues/pt = $10.13
  • Annual dues = $1013.00
  • Expiration year = 2062
  • # of yr left on contract = 37 (2062-2025)
  • Total cost per point per year = $12.72 ($96 per pt / 37 yr + $10.13 per point in dues)
  • Annual cost for DVC trip = $1272.46 ($12.72 * 100 points)
  • Out of pocket cost for us to stay at Pop at WDW: $1839 for a week (3rd wk of May, the week right before Memorial Day)
  • Approx. OOP (out of pocket) cost to stay in a cash studio room @ Aulani for a week: $7700
  • Approx. OOP cost to stay in a cash studio room @ Copper Creek for a week: $4200
The savings to us are equally as good if one were to pick AKL, Polynesian, BLT, GF, BRV, BW, for example.

Ok, that sounds great, but what about comparing this to a Moderate WDW resort? We've never stayed at a Moderate because of the cost, but the cost to stay at Caribbean Beach Resort in a standard room for Sun-Sat that same week in May 2025 would be $2228.65.

So for less money than I'd pay for a Value room, I get to stay at a Deluxe resort instead.

Also, Disney raises its room rates every year. That much we can all count on...plus death and taxes. haha! :-) Are the odds good that my family is going to go to Aulani and WDW several more times over the next...I don't know...20 years? YES! And this way, we can stay in nicer accommodations than we've usually stayed in at WDW, but do so at a lower cost to us.

This way, my DH can stop griping about how much it costs for a Disney trip. ;-) That's why WE bought into DVC. Other people's mileage may vary, of course!

One could certainly also argue that "Hey, your Pop Century no-discount example isn't valid since there ARE room discounts available for that week."

Fair point. So let's look at that.

For that same week in May 2025, a preferred room at Pop with the "Stay Longer And Save More On Rooms" discount would bring the total room cost for the week from $1839 to $1491. And that's STILL more expensive than the $1272.46 annual DVC OOP cost to us.

Opinions of this contract worth:
75 dollars per point for 250 points
Saratoga springs
No points available until 2026

I don’t think that is bad but are you planning a trip in 2025? Are you willing to borrow from 2026 to complete a trip if so?

I think the math in both of your posts is sound and I used similar ideas when justifying my recent purchase. The only push back I would offer is that 100 points may not get you a 7 night stay at the resort you want to stay at in May. It will for handful like SSR, OKW, AKL (non-savanna), etc. though.

I don’t want to go in 2025 as I just got back and would like to take a year off. However I would like to book something for 2026
To each their own. 2025 points could be banked into 2026 or rented out at $18ish per point.

I have found that most people get so excited about using their points that they plan a trip.

I’m looking at you… Aulani

True. That + the fact that I want to stay in 1 & 2 BR villas at Aulani is the reason why (once the dust settles) we're going to shop for another 100 pt Aulani resale contract. :-)

We are mid 50s and just bought our first contracts, all resale. We chose BWV because we love BW! It is higher per point since it ends in 2042 but we absolutely love it!! It makes us so happy to stay there. We bought CCV for the better per point price. I use those points for all other resorts. We figured if we get tired of going our grown children still love disney and would take our contracts.
My husband is mid 50s and I'm late 40s and we just bought SSR. We'll be 80ish when the contract ends. 🤣 We put my son on the deed so he can use it when we get too old. We should have bought sooner and would have probably saved some money. I think we will end up buying another contract so we can go a few times a year.

Honestly, if a person is happy with Pop Century Room, on the skyliner etc… then DVC wouldn’t be recommended.

Spreading out the initial cost of $9600 …. over 37 years …. Only provides a $218 annual cash savings.

Simply placing the $9600 in a safe bank CD would offset the savings.

DVC is for customers that want to stay at Deluxe resorts …. Only way the math works.

If you are happy with Pop Century as your “home resort”. Don’t buy DVC! 😊

The prices of DVC rooms don't generally increase in price though.

Lets look at Pop Century
1/1/2018 a standard room was $226
1/1/2025 a standard room went to $324

1/8/2018 a standard room was $126
1/8/2025 a standard room went to $183

Poly Standard Studio
1/1/2018 a standard room was 16 points
1/1/2025 a standard room went to 17 points

1/8/2018 a standard room was 16 points
1/8/2025 a standard room went to 17 points

DVC rooms can’t increase in costs, aside from small adjustments up in some seasons and correspondingly down in others. But I think there’s an argument to be made that Disney raises hotel pricing to drive more DVC sales as it looks to be “such a good deal” compared to rising hotel rates. But then DVC has to build more and more to have something new to sell. Weird unending cycle.

I should have been more specific. The kids and I liked Pop. Husband did not. Husband complained the entire time about how he thought it was a glorified Motel 6 (he’s dramatic at times). We’ve always wanted to stay Deluxe but didn’t due to cost. Now that we’re DVC owners, we CAN stay at deluxe resorts. So we are pretty happy campers! 🙂
