This will be my first stay at BCV (studio)...what will I need to bring or what should I not bring? My kids will be eating cereal in the morning...do I need bowls, spoons, etc? Is there a toaster? Also...how big is the fridge? (how many cans, how much milk (gallon?) can fit, etc.)

We're leaving in 7 days (yippeee!) and I don't want to have to spend a zillion dollars at the convenience store on things I could have brought from home.

Thanks in advance,
Pam

Hi Pam~

A while ago there was a great post with a very comprehensive "do not forget to take this" list. (I should have printed it out; I would guess it was back in April). You might try to do a search, or if someone saved the link, maybe they will post. Here are a few of my suggestions based on our first stay in a 1BR at BCV this past March:

Paper plates
Night light
Shower cap
a few extra trash bags
extra Bounce sheets (if you plan to do laundry)
Zip lock bags (the 2 gal. ones are great for packing)

Have a great trip!

We were in a BCV studio for 2 weeks in July. The best thing I did was take HANGERS!! There are 4 small drawers in the TV cabinet. We had myself, hubby, DS 15 and DD 13 in the room. All our clothes would NEVER have fit in those drawers.

There's plenty of closet space so I took a hanger for each pair of shorts, pants, skirt, tshirt, etc. Then we each kept our clothes in a separate section of the closet. The only things in the drawers were pajamas, socks & underwear - one drawer for each of us.

I second the idea of Ziploc bags and extra kitchen size (13 gallon?) trash bags.

I could fit a large jug of milk in the bottom of the fridge - I believe that's the gallon size.

Since we were staying so long, I took plates & bowls & a set of silverware and 4 tumblers - all unbreakable - and we washed them as we used them. For a shorter stay, paper bowls, plates, plastic utensils & cups would work fine.

When we drive, I take 2 laundry baskets & put them in the bottom of the closet. Everyone sorts dirty clothes into lights and darks as they take them off. It's easier to do laundry when it's sorted and I have the baskets to lug the wash in. If you're flying, then 2 trash bags on the closet floor work well. The laundry room has a wheeled cart that you can use to move the laundry to and from your room.

That's all I can think of at the moment! Best of luck & feel free to PM me with any questions.

Thanks for all the info! I would have never have thought of hangers. We'll be there for 5 nights, then moving over to CB (I know...I'm doing it backwards!!) We're driving so I'll definitely bring at least one laundry basket - another great idea!

I'm sure I'll have more questions before we go (we leave August 8th!)

Pam

You've already been given some really helpful hints. I'll just add a couple more thoughts.

The frig is a small dormsize one, not the dinky cube-shaped kind but maybe kind of a three quarter size. I bought our milk and juice in half gallon sizes and could easily fit four of that size in there along with other grocery items. Be aware that the freezer compartment is extremely narrow, so it's not good for too much really.

The paper supplies and plastic silverware supplied are startup supplies, so you may need to bring some of your own in addition.

I totally agree with bringing along hangers. Also, there is very limited storage space of any kind under the bathroom sink. So we brought along an over-the-door plastic shoebag. There were four of us, and we each had a vertical row of pockets to keep our own bathroom items in. Worked great!

Since you don't get a change of towels every day, and you won't have in-room laundry, here's another idea. We brought along plastic clothespins in four different colors. After showering or whatever, we clipped our own color clothespin to the bottom of the towel or washcloth to identify whose was whose. Again, it was easy and it worked great for us.

Yes, there's a toaster in the studios as well as a small coffeemaker and a microwave. You'll get two ceramic mugs and two glass glasses in addition to the paper products.

More questions? Let us know! Have a wonderful trip! :D

Travelbug - thanks for the great ideas!!

I never thought about an over the door shoe holder with compartments - this would solve a lot of our "bathroom sink counter just TOO FULL" problems!

I also think your towel-clothespin idea is truly inspired! We had this problem and I hadn't given much thought to a solution. I'll be taking colored clothespins next year!

We just came back from a studio stay and besides the itemd mentioned above, here are some things I have added to my packing list for future trips:

Playing cards, laundry tablets, and mesh laundry bags (inexpensive @ Walmart).

When I stay at the Villa's (studio, 1br,2br) I pack all of my food stuff in Rubbermaid storeage containers. "Not the giant ones" they are slightly larger then a avg cooler. This way they are easier to handle. After unpacking I use the containers as laundry baskets...one item dual useage...also in the storeage containers, food isn't crushed. My bread still has org shape.

Hope this helps.
