What time does it get dark in January?

When we went last September, it seemed to get dark around 7 or so - which was about the time it gets dark where we live (Idaho). In January, it usually gets dark around 5 or 5:30. Will that be the case with Florida as well? DH thinks because it is closer to the equator, it will stay light longer. I'm wondering because we want to go to world showcase while it is light. I know it doesn't open until 11 am and we have to head back to our room for a few hours early afternoon for naptime for our 2 girls.

Thanks!

It gets dark around 5 or 5:30 in Florida just like at home. It has nothing to do with being closer to the equator, but the fact that the sun rises in the east & sets in the west.

Actually it does get dark later in Florida than in the north. Dh and I have commented on it many times. I just looked up today's sunset times and it is about an hour later in Orlando than in the northeast.

Just a note if you are looking up the hour of sunset, it is not dark at the official time of sunset. It takes a good half hour after sunset before it is pitch black.

do you know if the time difference was accounting for dst? as far as my faulty brain remembers, it has been dark before we leave MK in Dec and Jan so I am guessing it is before 6 ( usual closing time when we are there)

nifty site ( at least for geeky me) with such info. http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html

When we went in January of 2002, the Magic Kingdom closed at 6:00pm. I have a picture of us at the ferry boat dock on the magic kingdom side at about 5:30/5:45. The sun, even though it was setting, is still blazing bright. The lights on main street had not been turned on by the time we left.

I would say that it does stay lighter somewhat longer down there.

according to the Official naval link above on Jan 5 ( when we were there) sunset is 5:45, end of civil twilight( not sure exactly what that is) 6:08, on Jan 30, it will be 6:08 and 6:28 ....for us in Ohio it's about 1/2 hr earlier ...in early Dec it is about 5:30 in Fl.
