What sort of bag/carrier to use?

We are going to disneyland for the first time in April. When we have been on holidays and the kids were all tiny we used a backpack and stroller to lug our stuff around in. Now the kids are older (8, 10 and 11) we shouldn't need to carry so much, just a few snacks, water etc. I would like to travel as lightly as reasonably possible. What do experienced disneyland travellers use to carry their stuff around in? What sort of bag is best? Is there anywhere you can put your bags safely when you are on rides?

Thanks all.

If you are worried about the rides and where to put your stuff, I would look for a waterproof or water-resistant bag that is not too big. The only rides I had trouble on were the Tomorrowland rocket ships they are tiny. All of the other rides you should have plenty of room to take-along the bag.

The reason I say waterproof or water-resistant is because if you are going to ride Splash Mountain or Grizzly River Run, the bag will most likely get soaked.

I forgot to mention what kind of bag- I would look for a backpack, these are the easiest to carry for long periods of time.

I've used a simple backpack (the basic one Rick Steves sells on his website) and that was OK. Next trip I am going to use a baggallini messenger bag, b/c I like having it across my chest, and doing that with a normal purse doesn't sit right and it twists around. I don't know how it will be, but tons of people use them for WDW.:)

I just take my bag with me on rides. Many rides (Indy) have mesh bags to put things in, or I just hold my stuff. Hold on tight if you're going on Tower of Terror, b/c bags "catch air" during the ride!

If you want to bring in more than you can comfortably carry, there are lockers for rent, both outside the gates and inside.

Our kids are the same ages as yours. We just got back and both DH and I carried a small backpack. It was easy, never in the way and we had everything we needed. We took jackets for each person, water, snacks, their spending $, sunscreen, etc. No problem at all on the rides--even Splash mtn. or Grizzly (on that one, I did hold it close and bend over it to protect it cuz the camera was in it.)

For Grizzly, there are FREE lockers. When you're looking at the big bear, go over towards the left, to the wooden pathways where you can watch the rafts go down the drop. Just over there is a building, and there are lockers. When I was there they were good for 2 hours of storage, but I've read that the actual time can change depending on the park's crowd level. You use the ATM-looking machine, it tells you what locker and what the code will be to open it. If you come back too late, there will be a fee that will need to be paid in order to open it.

But it's great, because you don't have to protect your stuff, you can just enjoy Grizzly!

My first time on it I didn't know where they were (it was already dark out, and rainy and cold b/c it was December, so I didn't want to dawdle plus I have rotten night vision) so I went on, and even though I had my poncho, quite a bit of energy and plastic was put towards protecting my bag. Because of that, my whole leg got soaked, because the poncho was pulled up to fully protect my bag.

The lockers are the best for Grizz!

I didn't know those lockers are free. Thanks, Molly. :thumbsup2

To the OP, I'm going to buy the messanger Bagallini too for our next trip.. I've heard lots of great things abott it.

Yep, love those free lockers. I coiuldn't believe how many ladies were taking their purses on GRR! I even offered to hold one lady's leather purse under my poncho. I kept telling everyone in our rafts (we went on repeatedly) about the free lockers and they were surprised!

The CM's obviously don't advertise this when people are heading on the boats with camera and purse in hand. . .
