when eating cereal or ice cream? I'm curious because DH's family uses what I consider to be a serving spoon to eat either one of these items. You know, the larger size spoon that comes with your silverware--not like a ladle or something. I use the smaller teaspoons. I've never seen anyone else do this but his whole extended family does it.

:lmao: Often, if I'm dishing up some ice cream, DH will put two spoons on the counter. I roll my eyes at him and put the enormous spoon back into the drawer.

I've been known to use either -- tablespoon or teaspoon. However, I DO NOT use a serving spoon. :snooty: ;)

I just pictured a bunch of heathens shovelling ice cream & cereal into their mouths with super huge spoons. How dainty of them! :rotfl2: Sorry, I'm sure they're all very nice people, it just made me laugh!

DH & DS14 do eat soup with a larger than normal spoon - one size up from a teaspoon & even that drives me crazy.

Are you bored? :hug::laughing:
I just use whichever is clean!

I use a teaspoon. The kids use teaspoons also because I'm the one who gave them a spoon when they were younger. Sometimes dd uses a soup spoon.

DH uses a larger spoon. I have always called them tablespoons. :confused3 Who knows what the correct name is....

It's a way of making sure the teaspoons and the soup spoons receive equal wear. :rotfl2:

I use the big spoon, in fact I am using it now.:lmao:

It's so funny you ask. DPartner and I have the same issue. She uses the tablespoons (which I always considered the serving spoons) and I use the teaspoon. I guess it's just whatever you were raised on. But I have her trained now. Anytime we have soup or cereal or ice cream, she gets one of each spoon out. She used to get two of her monster spoons out, and I would give her the same look that you give your DH, OP... :lmao:

When you say the large spoon, do you mean the larger spoon in a place setting like this? The one that's the same size as your dinner fork?

If so, that's the one I use. You may choose to use it as a serving spoon, but it's part of the place setting and was meant to eat with. It's not really a serving spoon. Your husband is not doing anything weird. ;)

I will use either a table or teaspoon for both.

For cereal, it depends on what I am eating. Call it strange, but if they are bigger pieces of cereal (Captian Crunch), I will use a teaspoon. But if the pieces are small (Fruity Pepples), it's a table spoon. :confused3 I don't know why I do this, it just always works out that way.

For just a bowl of ice cream, I usually just grab any ol' spoon. If it's a full blown sundae, it's a tablespoon.

Actually, they're a rather posh British family with impeccable table manners. Extended family dinners often have several courses. I have to remember not to switch my knife and fork back and forth in the American way or the kids look at me oddly. Maybe that's why it surprises me so much. :lmao: It just seems so out of character. Maybe they're saving the teaspoons for actual tea.

:rotfl2: I don't even understand how people can eat out of them.

Thanks for answering, everyone. I've been wondering about this for awhile and figured I'd get a wider range of answers here than I would just in my office.

My husband and I both use the teaspoon. Neither of us can stand eating from soup spoons - WAY too big.

I use a teaspoon. DH uses a tablespoon/soup spoon, except I call it a shovel.

My kids like it when we run out of clean teaspoons because then they get to use the "shovels" too!

That must be it! Saving the teaspoon for the tea!

I hope you weren't offended by my original comment. It was meant to be funny, but you know how text can be misinterpreted sometimes!

I use the teaspoon, my husband uses the larger soup spoon.

It's rather odd because I definitely have the bigger mouth.
