i bought a 7.1 mp camera today. its a nikkon coolpix. i have 256mb cards and want to get another. with the higher pixels i'm sure i can't take nearly as many pictures on each card.

so, should i just get one 512 and have the 512 and the two 256 or should i go with a 1gb.......or should i go with two 512s. i've seen people disagree on getting one large card of two smaller. i would love opinions, i'm soooo camera dumb.

oh and excuse the typing, my son has messed up the computer and it won't let me type in caps or a question mark etc. etc.

One of the issues becomes how often are you going to be setting the camera to 7.1 megapixels. It creates an extremely large file. Unless you have something that you really need that much resolution or detail on, say for instance one of those life size posters, you most likely should keep the setting to 4 or 5 megapixels---the size for a great 8x10 photo. That being said a 512 card with an extra 256 should give you a tons of pictures

Okay let me ask this question.

There is a setting that shows how large the pixel size will be. For a computer screen its like 1298 or something like that and then it says TV 650.....How on earth could 650 pixels be TV. Then there are larger Pixelss and much larger all in the thousands. That just confuses me so badly.

I have an 8mp camera and I always use the highest setting on it. That's why I bought the camera and that is the way I like to take pictures. If you've got it, flaunt it, right? :teeth:

anyhow, I have a 1gb memory card that can hold about 387 pictures of that size and I have a 512 that can hold about 197 pics of that size. I like the large cards, but I know a lot of people who prefer multiple small cards.

We use the highest resolution setting possible and buy the 512 and 1G memory cards.

i just got a Sony 1GB memory stick on amazon for less than $100 (may have been $94 - can't remember). anyway, i thought it was a good price!

How many pictures do you typically take?

For me, I usually fill up a 1gb card in half a day's vacationing.

That would be about 3 1g cards to keep all of those only on the cards. My 1g stores about 250-300 pictures.

I've gotten mine through mail order (DH ordered them), Walmart, Wolf Camera, and Sam's Club. Lexar has been the best performing.

I also always use the highest resolution with my camera. Why should I use a lower one? :confused3
I have a 5Megapixel Nikon and have two 512 MB cards, and then I have a 2.1 Megapixel Canon which I mainly use under water (I got a housing which is certified for depths of down to 100 feet) and for snapshots when I just want to carry a small camera. For this one I have three 128MB cards. For a vacation of up to two weeks I get along with those cards. For longer vacations I take my Sony Vaio Notebook for downloading the pics.
If you don't want to lug around your notebook while vacationing, you can also get a small portable harddisk with an integrated card reader. Over here in Germany a 30GB-disk with an integrated 12in1 cardreader costs about €120 ($150). This should get you through any vacation ;)
And not to forget: I also have a 2 Megapixel cameraphone with another 512MB card.

I have a 1 gig and a 512 card and I have a portable storage device, I download at the end of every day to it. I like having two cards just in case something happens to one of them. Also, if you were ever thinking about buying an iPod, some of them can be used as portable hard drives to store pictures on as well, wish I had known that when I bought my storage drive!

I usually take about 600 pictures on a vacation, thats an approx.

Holy cow, that's a lot! I see you got the same camera we got. I haven't had a chance to experiment with it yet. I told DH to read the manual and then show me how to use it, I hate reading directions!

I only average about 90 photos on a WDW trip, but I am very selective of the photos I do take!

Now with the digital, I guess I'll be wanting to take more though! :cheer2:

We haven't experimented with ours either. I told my DH the same thing you did. He can figure it out first and then show me although I played with it a bit and it doesn't look hard. I love taking pics with digital. If they are bad just erase them and we always get about 100 really good pics.
