What size of car should we hire for 4 adults, a 4 year old and an infant?

How about a 7 seater minivan?
It's the equivalent of our MPV - eg a Vauxhall Zafira :sunny:

The one we rented, a couple of years ago, was a Dodge Caravan (I think) and it had a harness system / built in child seat which our DD (then aged 4) was able to use.

You want to really think about how much boot space you need and work backwards...
the trunks in the US are not big!

I think it costs something like $5 a day unless you take your own :sunny:

A 7 seater Minivan is probably the best bet like Alison says, it could however depend on how much luggage you take as they are literally 'people carriers', do not necessarily have a lot of space for people and luggage.

I would initially book one of these , you may need to just see how much room you have for suitcases etc when you get there.

I wouldn't go for anything smaller than a mini-van. As Johnny says they are basically people carriers but with "strategic packing" you can get a lot in. You'll find this is really useful on your way back to the airport with bulging suitcases!

Thanks for the replies. If we take out platinum insurance does that cover costs for infant and baby seats?

It covers extra drivers, I think, but not sure about baby seats :)

I don't think it covers baby seats either, not 100% sure to be honest, suspect it covers a tank of fuel, all insurances though.

if you're book the car hire yourself and sharing costs i would look into getting 2 cars as that will give you more flexibility - not everyone might want to go to the same park etc on the same day

it was a god send for us when we last went

It doesn't cover the cost of the baby seats, and you might want to specify that you need one in advance. Those seats are limited in the summer.

If you've booked through Virgin Holidays, it includes baby seats.

Agree with this. We came with another familar and rented a villa. We both agreed next time we would get two cars. Although we all liked the same things, there were times when some wanted to go back to the villa when others wanted to stay.
