Good friend is having a get-together and I know she loves Riesling but, b/c I don't drink, I have NOOOO clue what I'm looking for when I go into the liquor store. Is the liquor store the best place to get it or can I get it at the grocery store and have it just as good? Is there only one type? If not, what is the best one? What is the (approximate) cost? Please help, I want it to be a nice gift.

I'm not sure where you live, but here they only sell wine at liquor stores. If it is the same where you live, just go to the liquor store and explain your situation. There is always someone very knowledagle there, and they will be able to help you out with the perfect bottle.

Our grocery stores have most of the same popular brands as liquor stores, so unless you wanted something obscure, you would be fine at the grocery stores here.

I've found it hard to go wrong on Riesling. I usually just pick the prettiest bottle for $15-20 and call it good! Haven't had any complaints yet.

This one has been a hit, and it has the added bonus of having a beautiful bottle that features the castle in Germany that inspired Cinderella Castle! http://prime.premiergroup.net/store...mpaign=base&v_traceback=c1215_1548_f1215_1551

That is very good wine. And I bought it because the bottle was pretty! :rotfl:

If you can find Bully Hill. Their wine is excellent.

in NC you get wine at the grocery store/walmart/target, liquor at the liquor store. my friend loves sunshine wine, reisling in a tall thin blue bottle with a sunshine on top.

I'm in the Chicagoland area too so that's good to hear. I hope I can find the "Disney" one...she loves Disney as much as I do so that would be great!

My favorite is Schmit-Shoen. It's a German wine in a blue bottle. I also like Starling Castle (I think that is what it is called). For something different that she will like if she likes Rieslings, try New Age. It is from Argentina and it is very good.

The Finger Lakes wineries are definitely known for their rieslings. Bully Hill is great; I also love Glenora, Hazlitt, Treleaven, Knapp, Swedish Hill.

If your friend likes a sweeter wine, go for a semi-dry. But dry rieslings are also great.

Just a quick note here, if you are buying a German riesling, you need to be careful about the sweetness of the wine. The labels on German riesling can be a bit tricky to decipher. It sounds as though you are buying a US riesling, so you should be OK.

I'm not much of a wine person, but one of the few that I do like is Chateau Ste Michelle's Riesling. They sell it at Costco here. . .but I'm in state. I think the one I like is labeled Cold Creek Vineyard Riesling Columbia Valley... it was one of the top 100 wines of 2010.

I like one that's called Relax. It comes in a nice blue bottle.

Yup. And usually around 11.99. Can't beat that.

Riesling is hard to mess up. It's incredibly delicious and even non wine drinkers I know like it. But my absolute favorite is Kung Fu Girl. The label is adorable and it is DEEEELICIOUS.

There are so many good ones - that should be easy and you shouldn't have to pay more than $15. I don't agree with another poster about Bully Hill - but that is just my opinion.

One of the best is Chateau St. Michele - about $12

I could go on and on

Generally speaking, sticking with a wine originating from the area of the world with where it is most associated is a good rule of thumb. In this case, the Mosel region would be the choice, and you can get some Rieslings from there for about the same price as the Chte St. Michele. In particular, one that consistently gets good reviews, tastes wonderful, and is readily available would be Dr Loosen, or Dr L as many call it. It retails in my shop for $11.99 and is my go-to Riesling for those who want a crisp, but lightly sweet table wine. Chte St. Michele is a fine choice, but I prefer the Dr Loosen. Slainte! :thumbsup2

If you buy a Riesling and if you are able to buy a German Riesling ask for the Ice Riesling.
This is a very special wine wich is harvested after the first freezing night. The wine is very tasteful and has a lovely sweet taste. The freezing does the trick it changes the grapes.
We see the harvest almost every year but I'm afraid this wine is very rare. There is always a very small section at the vineyards that is special reserved for this wine.
