What setting should I use for shooting through a fence?

We'll be at a Cubs game this weekend and I know I'll have to shoot my pictures through the screen behind home plate. I've used some setting before to focus on what is on the other side of the fence, but I cannot recall what that was. Can anyone help me out? I have a Canon 3SIS...

Use your widest possible aperture (lowest f-stop number).

Exactly...wider aperture and as much zoom as you can. Generally, the closer you are to the fence, and the more zoomed you are, the better. Bigger apertures will help to shallow the depth-of-field, and you may need to use the spot-focus area to pinpoint a player rather than multi-point focus which may try to pick up the fence.

Also try the infinity lock. On some models you may have to turn it on again for each shot.
